oral thrush in babies?

My breastfed bub has a patchy white coating on his tongue and around the inside of his lips, does it sound like thrush? I am currently taking antibiotics for mastitis and he started getting this white coating at around the same time i started the medication. Also if it is thrush could it be the reason he has been grumpy the past few days? and is it treated with medication? He is 8 weeks old.

Re: oral thrush in babies?

Get it checked out by your dr as if it spreads to your nipple it can be very sore (speaking from experience here!).  You can use Daktarin oral gel on both your nipple and their mouth, but I would just check that it is thrush first!

Re: oral thrush in babies?

It certainly sounds like oral thrush.  I suggest you take bubs to you GP to be sure before giving any medication.  The childhood nurse told me my bubs had oral thrush when she was 3 weeks old because she had a white coating on her tounge but she would scream when I put the medication on so I stopped.  I asked my GP and he said it wasn't thrush.

I will say again, I would take bubs to the GP and get it checked.

Re: oral thrush in babies?

Hey,

Did a little research for you and it does sound like oral thrush.. Babies who have Oral thush may have cracked skin in the corners of the mouth, and whitish or yellowish patches on the lips, tongue, or inside the cheeks. Also it is very common in the first 6months of them being born due to there immune systems not being mature enough. Most cases go away without medical treatment within a week or two, but your child's doctor may prescribe an antifungal solution for the baby to swallow.

If you are breastfeeding and your nipples are red and sore, there's a chance you may have a yeast infection on your nipples, and that you and the baby are passing it back and forth. If so, you may want to talk to the doctor about using an antifungal ointment on your nipples while the baby is being treated with the antifungal solution.

Re: oral thrush in babies?

Hi there,

It could possibly be Oral thrush. Before doing anything, I would get bub checked by doc. There is an oral medication called Nilstat that is good. Yoghurt with acidophilis and bifidus is very good. Also, Yakult and other probiotic drinks are excellent for oral thrush. As i said, check with Doc first as I am not sure with an 8 month old!

With out seeing it I wouldnt know for sure, but it sounds like it might be thrush. Its easily fixed with a bit of medication!  take him to the Doc and he will get you fixed up in no time!  my bub had it when he was a few months old, It can make him cranky  My bub stayed up and cried all the time (course he did that even if he was just fine!!!)
