Sick boy

My 2 year old is vomiting, no temp, but vomiting lots. He still wants breakfast so I have given him dry (no milk) rice bubbles & a glass of juice as he had water before & threw it up within 10 mins but I can't tell him he can't eat if he is hungry. Do you think I should take him to the doctor? I was going to see how he goes in the next hour but I'm not sure they would do anything for him anyway.

Also, does anyone have any ideas how I can get the smell of vomit out of my lounge suit & carpet? I have tried orange cleaner (made it a little better), stain remover (didn't help any), and glen 20 (masked it for a while) or will I have to get it dry cleaned? It's hard to get anyone out to dry clean anything where I am!

Thanks

Re: Sick boy

Oh sorry to hear your wee one is ill.

I found this product..Bauer is the brand. It is a natural product. I even have gave it to my newborn...the one i use is called stomach calm. I do not know how it works as it says it is for constipation, diarrhea and stomach pains...but it seems to work. I have used it 3 times with my son when he has had a stomach bug. It does stop the diarrhea. I at first thought it was that the bug had run its course....so i stopped giving it..and the diarrhea came back. I also stick to just sips of water. Icy poles and dry biscuits.

If he seems to have bad pains in his stomach...best to see doctor. Could be appendix. Panadol to help fever. If it is a high fever i use nurofen and alternate with the panadol(you will this way be giving pain relief every 2 hours as such....ie...panadol(given every 4 hours..so say give at 1pm....nurofen(also every 4 hours) can be given at 3pm....panadol 5pm..nurofen 7...will help keep the fever at bay...if it doesn't go to see a doctor.

I am not a medical trainned person but thi sis what i have done with kids for over 13 years. If you have not given nurofen(KIDS) before see how he goes after the first dose. My son started to get asthma. None of the othe rkids i have looked after had this. If he is an asthmatic do not give.

I hope he gets better soon.

I must say i did laugh...i too have recently gone through the need to clean my lounge and carpet! Milk is so revolting! I used vanish carpet cleaner..it is the spray one..not foam.(well they are both spray..one says foam) Seems to be ok??? The longe...mmmm i wiped it down. It seems ok. A friend of mine uses vinegar. Good luck.

Re: Sick boy

Hello & thanks, he is all better today & I was doing all you suggested while he was sick. I have experience in medical so I knew what to do & I love Brauer products, I just wanted reassurance I guess that I was doing it all right this time. I didn't have any stomach calm on hand this time & it's 1/2 hour drive for me to get to a pharmacy & that wasn't happening yesterday! Thanks again

Re: Sick boy

I would be keeping him off solids for today, just giving water or weak juice.  Maybe a little later try him with some toast.  If it is a gastro bug, then the recommendation is to starve it from his body so that the bug leaves the system quicker.

If he is really insistant on eating, then maybe some plain, dry bikkies.

The main thing is to keep the fluids up and make sure that he doesn't get worse.  Kids don't always get a temp when vomiting so that's normal.  He could have been over excited or over tired over the last few days and it has caught up with him today.

Re: Sick boy

Thanks Arna, I have kept him off solids so far today & will offer him toast for tea as he hasn't vomited since this morning & slept for 4 hours this afternoon. He has had a few cups of weak juice & a little water today & just finished a hydralyte iceblock & seems happy enough for now. He has been over excited this week as I just started having a friends son 2 days a week & they are great friends.

Re: Sick boy

Sounds to me like he may just have a little stomach bug, they are going around a lot around here. Just keep fluids introduced and let him rest, don't give him any solids until he asks for them, and only a small amount at a time, such as crackers. He will be just fine, if he keeps up the vomiting, get him to the doctor in the morning. Good luck!

Re: Sick boy

Hi, that's what I thought. He's keeping fluids down for now & only had a handful of dry rice bubbles & I won't give him food unless he asks. Thanks

Re: Sick boy

Is it a stomach flu? My whole family came down with the stomach flu the day after christmas...even my then 5 month old were throwing up. We were all vomiting. It was awful. But thankfully, it was only a 24 hr bug. None of us came down with a fever.. we just couldn't keep anything down.

Perhaps your son is suffering from the same thing?

What you need to do is to make sure that your son doesn't get dehydrated. So just stick with little sips of water. If the vomiting lasts more than a day, I suggest phoning your doctor. Also, if there is diarrhea with the vomiting, that's a lot more serious as it's that much easier to get dehydrated.

By the way, if it is the stomach flu that is making it's round all around the world, be careful. Do a lot of hand washing, as everyone in your household may get it as well.

Re: Sick boy

Hi Izzy & thanks, I think it must be a stomach flu & he has kept some fluid down in the last 1 1/2 hours & we have hydralyte ice blocks in the freezer. His temp is up now so I have given panadol & just waiting to see how he goes.

Don't worry, everyone is washing their hands lots at the moment, we can't afford to all get sick as hubby is too busy to come look after us!

Re: Sick boy

Your son sounds like he is allergic to something you are giving him. I had that problem with my son, and it turns out my son is allergic to a LOT of things. Go to the doctor and ask him about it. His body could also be over sensitive. If thats not it, obviously tests are going to need to be done. But the doctors will eventually figure it out.

Re: Sick boy

Take him to the doc for sure. He may give your litte one some gastrolyte popsicle to suck on & that will get him hydrated.

I have gastrolyte sachets, they help with rehydration if you have gastro. If my little one of throwing up alot, I empty a sachet in water & he drinks it right up & it stops him throwing up, enough for him to have a sleep & get better. I also put a bit of panadol in it.

good luck

PS. bi carb soda works wonders

Re: Sick boy

Hi & thanks. I have hydralyte ice blocks in the freezer so we are all good there, he has kept some fluid down but his temp is up so have given panadol & just waiting a while to see how he goes. Put the bicarb straight on the carpet last night but the couch is the hard one to get the stink out of!

Re: Sick boy

Thanks Nicky, I have done the bicarb thing on carpet but can't get the smell out of the couch! GRR! He hasn't thrown up for about 1 1/2 hours now - kept down 2 cups of juice & an handful of dry rice bubbles but he has a temp now so I am watching him for the next hour or so to see how he goes.
