UK Benefits Question

Hi! I dont know where to start looking for this info so I thought I'd ask & see if any UK parents have been there before me.

I have some friends with one 5 year old who are struggling to make the money go round. As with most of us, the Inland Revenue has messed up their payments, and so has cut their payments to cover the overpayment. I was surprised that they dont seem to qualify for working tax credits (fortunately DH earns too much for them but in this couple the husband earns half what my DH does, so i was surprised). Does anyone know any good websites/ advice lines where they can go thru their finances and see if HMRC have assessed them wrongly or if there are any benefits that they should have claimed?

Re: UK Benefits Question

I'm going to keep an eye on these answers here myself

I've just been told my benefits are going to be cut back as I earn too much ???????

the boys father gets legal aid yet is a full time paramedic I have to pay a £100 retainer each month for my legal aid.  Its crazy, I don't know how some manage to claim so much money on benefits yet those who need it get told they don't qualify for it

Re: UK Benefits Question

If all else fails, they could always talk to Citizen's Advice bureau who will give them really good advice.  They need to make an appointment, as talking on the phone it is taking pot luck as to who is available to talk to.

Re: UK Benefits Question

That would be good - they could try and get an appointment when they visit, so should have all the relevant info. Good luck.

Re: UK Benefits Question

thanks!

DH found that he spent his life applying for everything when he was on JSA and got... nothing! It's just sooo complicated. No wonder half of it goes unclaimed!

Re: UK Benefits Question

If you were in Australia, I'd be saying ask my partner, but we are a little bit slow on how things work your way.  maybe you could ask Emmie about it?  Or Izzy?  They will probably be along soon any way!
