big BIG baby.

hey guys. Well, my daughter is now 5 months old. today i went to my child heath nurse for her cheak ups and got a bit of a shock. My 5 month old is a big, BIG baby. She weighs 12 kg and is 70cm long. If im correct, thats the size of a 1 year old! i was told to put her on a "baby diet" which includes cutting back one bottle a day, rice cereal for breakfest with fruit and veggies with a small bottle for dinner, also including water between feeds. I have a bad bad habbit of giving into my spoiled girl. it took so much to bring her into this world and i just want her to be happy, but deep down i no its only going to damage her in the long run. so heres my question (finally)... how do i get my daighter to drink her water between meals as she ABSOLUTELY hates it and how do i not give in? also.. how do you excersise a 5 month old? i cant stick her on the treadmill!?!?

Re: big BIG baby.

Hi. I wouldn't stress too much! At 5 1/2 months my skinny little bub bulked up so much she was off the charts. THen she decided to get mobile! She commando crawled evrerwhere! The extra bulk soon fell off!She would rarely drink water but as she was breastfed I didn't worry about it too much. She really started to enjoy water at about 9 months!

Re: big BIG baby.

what have you been feeding her? if she's been eating the standard things, like fruit, veges, cereals, milk and she's getting active i wouldn't worry. she'll slim out by herself. i'd just give her more activity to do rather than cut down on the food.

Re: big BIG baby.

IM in the same position my little girl hannah is 11m old she was realy little when she was born but she is huge now she weighs 14k and she is in a size 2.   She has more rolls on her than banjos lol.    My doctor recommened the pool so .I have been taking her to the local pool we go for an hour and she loves it.

I dont buy tin food i do it all my self, i stew all her fruit as then its  real no added sugar.  As for the water I would add a little of the stewed fruit juice into it as said below.

cheers hope all goes well lisam

Re: big BIG baby.

Just a thought with exercise - can you take her swimming? It's great exercise!

And I wouldnt worry about her size too much (though try to get into good habits if you can) as I had the opposite problem - a baby who hardly grew until she was on solids. She looked so funny besides all the "Little Budhas" with their double chins! But guess what - after they got mobile they all slowed down and she shot past them. Some of them hardly put on an ounce in their second year, and now looking at them as they reach school age I can say the size of the 5 month old has no bearing on the size of the 5 year old!

Re: big BIG baby.

hi there,

when my eldest child was a baby, i used to make every last meal for him. i never bought baby food as we couldnt afford it, so he ate all the things we ate, only puree'd. this has many advantages, one of which is that pretty much nothing goes to waste.

one thing though, was that he hated to drink water. so instead, i would give him the water that i'd boiled the veges or fruit in. the advantages of that are, the water is packed full of nutrients, that have come out of the fruit or veges, and the water is already boiled so i didnt need to worry about purifying it for him. and it tastes nice too, not plain and boring like normal boiled water. and guess what, he drank it every time.

hope it works for your little girl, she's absolutely gorgeous.

Yep, I used to do the same with the fluid from the stewed fruit!

hey don't stress to much she is a growing girl i have the same problem with my 6 month old daughter they told me to put her on a diet as she is 10 kg and 65 cm long but she doesn't drink juice or water only milk and only has soilds once a day but she spends all her day rolling round on the floor in her walker or her jolly jumper, you can't do much they need fluid and food they will lose it when they are moving more.

Re: big BIG baby.

I have heard of  a baby Diet... they said they might put mine on one (she is also 5 months...born Nov 25!!) if she keeps "growing" at this rate. Its not as bad as it sounds. altho I do think the Dr.s do over react! 10 or so years ago they didnt have all these regulations and everything...  the way I get my girl to drink water is I have to wait untill she is really hungry! and  just refuse to give her milk untill she has drank atleast an ounce or so of plain water... when she gets that hungry she will drink about half an ounce before she realizes its just water and when she spits it out I take it out her mouth and shake it like I would if I had just put the formula in it and then put it back in her mouth!! it will be a bit of a fight but she gets in to the habbit after a while and she is doing really good with water now.

An easy exersize is to lie her on her back and roll her just a bit so she is not quite on her side, and hold on to her arm, that way she can pull agains you adn roll her self over... do it with both sides.    also... tummy time. put a favorite toy in front of her and let her work at trying to get it... if she dont have a favorite toy then try a Binki (Pacifier/ sucky... some people dont know what a Binki is)... altho I have learned with these they get irritated more quickly adn just want the Binki!!!

I hope this works a bit and is helpfull

Re: big BIG baby.

Hi there,

I am a bit surprised by the idea of a baby diet too.... my little boy is 4.5 months and 9kg. People are always commenting on how big he is. I take solace in the fact I was a very big baby and am now a great weight (65kg / 170cm). My Mum recently showed me my baby weight chart and I was off the chart... way beyond the 100% percentile when I was a little bub.

So if a Doctor gave you the diet idea I would go ahead, but not necessarily if it came from a health nurse (sorry to all those health nurses out there, but mine has not been particularly helpful).

I have not figured out a way to get my bub to take water... but I guess if they are hungry enough they will take what is on offer... I can imagine that will involve a bit of protesting tho! In regards to exercise, I recon a play mat is best, with lots of toys so she can practise stretching and rolling....

good luck

Re: big BIG baby.

Are you for real?  A baby diet.....are you sure.  I have never heard of such a thing.  I have a 5 mth old girl as well and when she was last weighed in March (I know a bit slack) she was 66 cm and 7.07kg dressed.  Did they weigh your girl with clothes on.

A baby diet....I just can't get passed that.  Feeding her and making sure she is happy isn't spoiling her.

With the water, just keep giving it to her and eventually she will realise that nothing else is on offer.  I did this with my eldest however she wasn't 5 mths when I did.

Good luck with it and let me know how you're going.

Michelle

Re: big BIG baby.

some days, i have to admit i get a bit frustrated with the "weight" issue. When people stop to ask how old, and i say 5 months, they laugh at her for being so big, she just smiles at them. Some days i just want to smack them right in the kisser!!! an isult to abbi (bub) being big is an insult to me! you may as well call me a bad mother or fat... i dunno... thats how i feel some days... is that silly?

Re: big BIG baby.

You're not a bad mother, you love your daughter and some babies are big.  She is happy.  Babies generally lose most of the "baby fat" when they start crawling.

Re: big BIG baby.

have you got a jolly jumper? id try that babies go nuts in them!

just stick to the docs orders and maybe dilute milk for a bit? im not sure i dont use formula but if you have to give her water and she doesnt like it maybe u can get her used to it by diluting one bottle a day and making it with less and less milk each time.

good luck

Re: big BIG baby.

hey, thanks for the reply and so fast! i couldnt help but laugh though when you asked about the jolly jumper, i brought one of the tiger brand ones that have sound affects, and as soon as she was able to hold her head stright enough in it, she was passed the reccomnded weight! she was already to heavy! i have brought a walker for her, but she is teething right now, and as soon as she is in, she tries to eat all the toys and only gets herself upset
