Blood-curdling scream!

I just wrote this in my blog, but someone suggested I put it here so here goes:

For the last couple of days Krystana has developed a habit of squealing when she's trying to get our attention (ie, it's not a squeal of joy but a blood-curdling sound usually when she's laying down). She doesn't seem in pain and no amount of burping her does anything. She just flexes herself backwards and lets rip sometimes. It's so loud and so high pitched I just can't bare to here it!

It has been cold here in Perth lately, but she's stayed warm so I know it;s not that (neither is she too hot). We think she may be teething but not more teeth have showed through. Just don't know what seems to be causing it, except to say she does it to get our attention (it's not like we ignore her tho......she's just started squealing sometimes instead of just crying, or while crying).

I don't know what to do about it but it really gets me down  and I'm actually getting to the point where I'm almost afraid to hear it....it's just horrible.

It's about time for some teeth.  I would try to give her something to soothe her gums when she screeches and see if that fixes your problem.  You wouldn't want bub to be in pain!

Re: Blood-curdling scream!

Sounds to me like you are dealing with a little girl who is finding her independence.  Oh yeah, all ours have gone through this, including our 11month old who is slowly learning that we aren't going to give in easily.

Don't react to the squeals, finish what you are doing and tell her so in a calm neutral voice.  It is hard, but practice makes perfect.

Her squealing is actually a sign of frustration.  Either when something she does doesn't work or she doesn't get her own way.  Oh, and they never grow out of this either, only evolve it!

Thanks Arna - will try to keep the frustration thing in mind and keep my tone calm and neutral when it's at it's worst......not easy though lol.

Pity they don't grow out of it lol

she has discovered her voice and with that a reaction. try not to react when she screams(mine laughed when i ran to them) but react to another sound she makes.

Re: Blood-curdling scream!

Hi I just went to you profile and your daughter is 5mths right?  If so then maybe she is just finding her voice.  My son is nearly 10mths and he still screams.  Really high pitched screams.  He has been doing this  since he was about your daughters age.  Just try and ingore it.  Not much you can do about it.   Right now he is under my feet screaming LOL.   Try teaching her some sounds like da da da and ta ta ta and ma ma ma etc.  repitition is the key.  And one at a time until she masters it.

Hope this helps, sorry if it dosen't
