Who cares what age your child watches TV, as long as you don't use it as a baby sitter.

Question if you and the rest of your family like watching a show at night.  Do you put your daughter in another room or face her away from the tv so she feels left out.

If  during the afternoon you decide to have a cuppa and put your feet up and watch a liked afternoon show do you put her to bed even if she will not sleep, put her in another room.

This seems like another bit of advice from "experts" designed once again to make mother worry over nothing.

If your daughter watches a bit of tv during the day so what.   If your chatting to her, reading to her, playing with her and that is just one of the things she does during the day I'm 100% sure it will do no harm what so ever.  But if you just prop her in front of the tv and use it as a baby sitter then that maybe a problem

Stop worrying.

Re: television

It's recommended to wait until they are 2.  However my son LOVED to watch government hearings on t.v. when he was a baby.  LOL.

Re: television

2 if that is the case I fail badly.

My daughter loves the tv she thinks its another person and will merrily chat away to it.  She is not really intent if she is playing with her jungle gym she will turn her head towards it have a chat, then turn back to her jungle gym and have a chat to that.

Re: television

Hi honey,

I really don't think that there is a right or wrong answer here, I believe that it is really more of a personal choice. I know with me none of kids watch TV until they were around 15 months . .  I think that whenever you start to allow it you really should monitor the amount of TV that they watch . .

The experts all say we shouldn't really allow our children to watch TV until they are 2 and over BUT there are those that say this in unrealistic so I really guess it is your choice as a parent . .

Cheers Kellz

Re: television

As you have read most people say at any age is fine. My Tv sits on ABC for most of the morning and i have 2-3 hours of getting the house clean then the telly goes off till the afternoon when ABC kids starts again. While the telly is off we spend the time just playing.

Hope all the answers help, Juzzy xxx

Re: television

My son watches the telley already. we sit together and watch some singing ones and he really likes that boobah show with those colorful blobs. i make it a time of interaction for him though i dont sit him there alone usually. i have before to go cook dinner or hang some washing out but he is still a baby. my nephew watched the telly from 10 months. his favorite was elmo.

Re: television

I had it on from very early on. Mainly just for noise and colour in the mornings. On saying that, my youngest wore out Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat dvd by the time he was about 2. He loved to settle to it and learnt to sing all the songs. He still enjoys watching it today. If I was watching TV then the kids were.

Re: television

For my eldest daughter I used to put the Wiggles on when she was a baby so I could do the housework etc and she loved the bright colours.  When she got a little older, she would watch for 10 - 15 mins and then play for about 30 - 40 mins and then watch tv again.  I have a 5 mo now and she is not interested in watching, she would rather watch her sister, me or her father.

There is really no answer to your question, it is up to you.

Re: television

skye liked the  noises more than the visual part and even now if the telly is on unless it has loud music or loud voices etc she wont watch it unless its harry potter or monsters inc. try buying education dvds or documentaries skye loves watching baby elephants and lions and she learnt her animals and colours really quickly through them because they were always refferred to in the script....

Re: television

I don't know if there really is an answer as such to your question but more a question of when you think they are ready for what could be construed as being a direct sewerage pipe into the family home.

There really are minimal shows on television from which the youth of the world are able to learn good citizenship skills.

If I had my time over I would never have purchased a T.V. and would have spent the money on musical instruments and/or various family activities.

Re: television

I try not to let either of my girls watch much tv during the day at all because I prefer them to be able to go off and play creatively and use imagination - but that is my opinion (they are 2 and 5 months old). However, in saying that on the occassions when they do watch some TV it's usually something like playschool and other ABC kids shows, or doco's or something. I am looking forward to the day when I can let them out the back to play with each other and they can burn off excess energy and get excercise and everything.

Re: television

Experts say wait until 2 years old.

That said, my son watched TV at an early age. I had the TV on on Sesame Street all the time.  Now the TV is on in my house pretty much all the time even if no one is watching it.

Just remember not to let kids watch too much TV. They need one on one time with mom and dad.

Re: television

They can start at any age!  Right from birth, which could help to settle them when they hear familiar program themes.

Any way, in Australia, the best shows for a wide range of ages seem to be:

Hi 5

Play School

Seasame Street

The Wiggles and all the 'spin off' shows.

BoohBah (have to wait for it to come back)

I'm sure there are plenty more.  These are just the ones I've noticed our girls really enjoy and are actually learning from.

Re: television

DS liked those BAby Einstien videos when he was real little aobut 4 months. I have been told by our Home Health nurse that is can actaully hlep their eye muscle coordination to focus on things like that. Of course as they get older you have to limit ti some.

Even younger than that he seemed to like to look at things, so If they like it go for it.
