Weight loss during pregnancy

I am in the early stages of pregnancy and was wondering when weight loss becomes of concern. I have lost 6kg in 1 week and as much as itry to eat ( I make what I eat as nutritional as possible) it either goes straight through me or comes back up. I am constantly tired to the point If I sit for more than 5 mins I am asleep, I get dizzy when ever I am standing. By the way early stages meaning 7 weeks

Hi,

I'm at the same stage as you and I've lost a couple of KGs even though I'm eating (slowly and a little) through the nausea and sleepiness.

I don't know why you have lost so much weight. You should go to your doctor just to check. It could be that you're carrying more than 1 baby, and so you need a few more calories.

Good luck!

Re: Weight loss during pregnancy

I to was wondering what would be a concerning weight loss this is my second pregnancy and I am only two months along but I have lost almost 15 pounds. With my first I had a little weight loss but not this much. I was not sick with my first and I have not been sick as of yet with this one. Any idea of what is a concern would help.

you definitely want to stay hydrated because if you don't, the doctor will put you in the hospital.  It sounds like you aren't able to keep very much food down and that is going to add to your sleepiness and dizziness because you aren't getting enough energy to keep you going.  So sorry you are feeling bad.  I would ask your doctor to tell you what point you should be concerned.

Re: Weight loss during pregnancy

oh yes.. vitally important to stay hydrated.

I lost 10 lbs in 3 days after I came home after giving birth to my twins (due to meds). I was so close to being admitted back! After being in the hospital for 7 days at that point, I wasn't about to let them take me back without a fight. LOL

But all kidding aside, please call your doctor.

Re: Weight loss during pregnancy

6kg in a week? Are you throwing up several times a day and can't keep anything in? What has your doctor said? A lot of women lose weight when they have really bad morning sickness, but it's best to check with your doctor. Can you keep fluids down?

As far as fatigue, this is normal as well. I had this with my first pregnancy. It started from about 7 weeks pregnant to about 11 weeks. I was so tired and sleepy that I only have to sit down for a minute or 1 and I fell asleep. I didn't get so tired with my 2nd pregnancy though.

Re: Weight loss during pregnancy

When I was pregnant with my oldest, I was that sick that I couldn't even keep water down.  I was in hospital several times in the first 5 months and still had morning sickness at 7 months.  I lost a lot of weight, but my baby was fine.  The concern really in early pregnancy is dehydration, so keeping your fluids up is very very important.  Have found since that things like super chilled water and plain, salty chips helped to settle my stomach.  When you are sick, you  lose a lot of salts and the chips help with that.  The super chilled water seemed to ease the spasms in the stomach so that I could eat.

If you get to the point where you can't even keep a sip of water down, then go to the hospital as dehydration is very serious.  They can put you on intravenous medications to control the nausea and vomiting (I couldn't keep the tablets down!) which will help.

I would still discuss your concerns with your dr asap so that they are aware of the situation.

The dizziness is normal too.  Low blood pressure due to the pregnancy.  I'm 24 weeks with my 5th child, and still have dizzy spells, but my blood pressure is not a concern to the drs.
