work question

i'm sorry, this isn't a parenting question.

i'm thinking of trying to get work in payroll, i did an external course to learn myob 15 3 years ago, so i need a refresh, but does anyone here work in payroll, or know anyone that works in payroll, and how they learnt it and got into the businessand how i can get into it? what other training i might need? i'm a single mum, need a decent pay and i'm limited with what i can do right now.

Re: work question

Right up my alley as I used to work for an employment agency and used to teach MYOB.

First, payroll is hard to get into. Where they used to hire 3 or 4 people to do the job, they now only hire one and a computer. Small firms either do it by hand or use a program like MYOB. Larger firms have dedicated software.

If you really want to get into payroll then I suggest an MYOB refresher including the payroll module. This should give you a fairly good understanding of how payroll works.

As for looking for work. Start by looking around at some of the small businesses. You may have better luck with them. Larger organisations want a 16 yo with 10 years experience etc (in other words - the impossible as cheap as possible).

If you need any more help minti mail me - only to happy to help - If I was a little more organised I would take you through some training myself - this is right up my alley.

Re: work question

thankyou so much for your help. the myob course i did went through everything including basic payroll. It was beginner, intermediate and advanced MYOB V.15 with the accounting college so i did it externally learning it athome from the booklets and cd. but it was in 2005, so i think i need to go over it all again.

so if i was to do another mYOB course again and really work on the payroll section, i might get lucky with a small business? it seems that everyone wants 2 years experience + lol, how are you supposed to get the experience? :P

my current occupation is as a phlebotomist (i take blood samples and other pathology specimen samples) but the pay isn't fantastic, and being a single mum i need a better paying job.

Re: work question

First, the pay as a payroll officer is not that great - for smaller businesses you would work across all bookkeeping areas particularly with MYOB. I don't know what a phlebotomist earns but a payroll officer (or general bookkeeper ) doens't earn a lot. Not more than $20 per hour.

You could always set up a home bookkeeping business - do both jobs. It is just a matter of buying in a full version of MYOB and then selling your services to the small businesses around your area. Get some experience that way then approach the various accountants and offer them your services.

There is not a lot of money in bookkeeping when you work for someone else - work for yourself and you can make a reasonable income - and you can do the work at night when the kids are in bed.

Re: work question

Oh, Oh, one for my hubby!  I'm going to get him to come and let you know.  If you'd like, you can always Minti mail him at RadicalB.

The reason I suggest my better half is because he actually taught this for an employment agency.
