I had to wait until I was 13 to get pierced ears.  It tortured me.

Re: Ear Piercing

A friend had her 6 month old girl's ears pierced and they do look cute. It's a personal choice as to how old you have them done. For me, I preferred to wait until my girls where old enough to understand what was going on. When my youngest had hers done she was about 6. I told her straight up that it would hurt a lot, but would stop hurting very quick. She was fine. I think it helps that they know it will help as it's the shock of how much it does hurt that upsets kids the most.

Re: Ear Piercing

I got my 11 month old twins' ears about 4 weeks ago. They cried, of course. I was worried they may keep touching their ears, but they didn't. The earrings were all but forgotten by the time we got home. I was told to use alcohol wipe 2x a day and to turn the earrings for 6 weeks - so I'm still doing this. There has been no problems at all.

Re: Ear Piercing

hi steph both my girls had their ears pierced at 4.5 and 7, the chemist here had one person on each side and they use the piercing gun at the same time otherwise you may find that after having one done she may not want the other done!!

Re: Ear Piercing

My son was not allowed to get his done til he turned 16. I felt then that he was ready to make that decision himself. He had wanted it for a few years and I had told him he had to be 16.

Re: Ear Piercing

My mum had my ears pierced when i was 8months old. My ears never got infected.

Its a personal choice when you think you want to get them done, some ppl say u shudnt do it cos it shud b their choice but i think all girls like having there ears pierced and if not they can close up.

I would be too scared to go get mine done now lol so im glad my mum had done mine when i was little. Also ive always had to wear only gold earings, i get infections from fake jewelry.

Re: Ear Piercing

I first had mine done when I was 13 years old and they got infected, but by then I was old enough to deal with that. I'm linking an advice about body-piercing, which includes info on ear piercing, and although targetted at teenagers, is the same for any age really. With little kids, be very aware that having them torn out by accidents of all strange types can be a risk, and some schools won't allow earrings to be worn at all, though most allow small plain studs or sleepers.

Re: Ear Piercing

My girlfriend had her daughters pierced at 6 months, she could not find anyone to do it any younger then that, so I don't know if thats the legal age....   She has had no problems with them at all, they did them at the same time, apparently she got a bit of a shock let out a little wimper and that was it.......  She has not tried grabbing at them and cleaning them has been no problem......  I personally did not have my daughters done as I would rather she decide what she wanted done to her body, I got mine done at 13, but when my daughter tells me she wants them whatever age she is I will do it then.  x

Re: Ear Piercing

I will be making my girls wait until they are old enough to understand that it is for 'keeps' and not just something for today or the we.  That will probably be when they are around 12.

This way, it is them making an informed choice and not my choice for them.

Re: Ear Piercing

We had a rule in our house that my sister and I would be allowed to have our ears pierced on our thirteenth birthdays.  This worked well for our family and I plan to also make this rule (maybe 10 years though as the times have changed) for my own children.  I would worry that possibly children cannot understand the extent of the pain and endure it well at much of a younger age.  Do what you feel comfortable with - but maybe setting a rule for any other family members to reach the same age also, may cause less fights and also stop any complaining/nagging, as they know the family rule.  It worked in my family.

Re: Ear Piercing

Hi Steff

I do piercings as a career and the age the people start getting ears done at is 3 months (this is the legal age where it is ok) would not recomend until at least 6 months, though under about 18 months is the best time as there is less fuss... i also wouldnt recomend getting both ears done at the same time as if one gun goes off before the other your child has time to move and then oposite gun will go in the wrong spot.

Good luck

Re: Ear Piercing

i personally think a child should decide weather or not they want this done. i also think it is bad to pierce a baby/toddlers ears aswell.

My daughter was 3 when she had hers done and she asked everyday for almost 6 months to have it done. she has had them just over 6 months now.

Pros

at 3-4 is the child knows what they want.

they understand what pain is

they can clean them

con

they touch alot

they dont clean there hands before touching

high risk of infection

it hurts like hell to them.

there isa alot more pro's and con's but this is all i can think of right now.

good luck

oh and if u decide to get it done. get it done properly in a pericing place as they are very hygenic and those guns at a chemist aint. yeah it cost a shite load more (like $60) but there is a heap lower risk of infection and it is a nicer way done than a gun as the noise scares kids
