Bent shins?

I have been debating with myself whether to ask this question as we haven't spoken to many people about it, but I am really worried. Our youngest son is 15 months and is quite bow legged - it is quite noticable & people comment on it a lot. He can't wear boots that come above his ankles as he walks on the outside edge of his foot if he does. We keep soft-soled shoes on him all the time, but it looks like his shin is bent just above his ankles - one side a bit worse than the other. I asked my doctor about it a few months ago when I went by myself & he said not to worry as all kids are bow legged to start with until gravity changes it - I tried to explain that I know this is true as our oldest was for a while too but nothing like this but he said not to worry. I will get the doctor to look at them at his 18 month appointment but my question is has anyone else had a child with a similar problem & what did they do to help/fix it? It hasn't affected his ability to walk or run at all so will they do anything at all? Could it affect him later in life?

Thanks

Re: Bent shins?

Someone brings up my 14 month old's bowed legs Every.  Single.  Day.  He has the fattest legs I have ever seen and the most bowed legs I have ever seen.  It is more pronounced when he is wearing shoes (probably because we never actually made him wear shoes and now he is trying to figure out how to navigate with them).  Almost all babies have bowed legs until they are around 2 1/2 or 3 and then it goes the other way (they become knee-knocked).  The only concern about bowed legs is that your child may have a vitamin D deficiency  (rickets) or Blount's disease.  Both are not common.  I would take bub to the doctor to rule out both and then I wouldn't worry about anything.

Re: Bent shins?

Thanks Kristen. I know most bubs have bowed legs but poor little man has very pronounced bends just above his ankles so I will definetly getting them checked out at his 18 month appointment.

Re: Bent shins?

I agree with RadicalB,

Jedd's legs are bowed. At his last dr. visit (18months) I asked about it because it had not gone away. She watched him walk around the office, naked of course....so she could get a good look. She told me the name of what he has, it's really long and I cna't remember it...LOL

Anyways, the gist of the story is, as long as the kneecap points straight formward and is NOT bent the ankle will follow as the leg (shin) bone grows.

Since Jedd's knee is straight, his ankle bone in time will correct itself.

That said, I would have the DR. look at it to make sure. I had asked about Jedd's when he was tiny, I could tell. At that time he was soo little, that lots of kkids have bowed legs shrotly after they are born. Since it had persisted that's why I asked.

It def. doens't slow him donw any, that's for sure, he is all over the place....climbing onto eveything.

I will say, it made me feel much better to hear the ped. tell me he would be fine. LOL So ask for your peace of mind.

Re: Bent shins?

Thankyou, it's nice to hear it from someone who knows what it's like. Oscar's shin from his ankle actually curves outwards & to be honest I have never looked closely at his knees, but I am sure they are straight & will look later when he has a bath. I will ask our doc just for piece of mind but you have certainly eased my worries - thanyou again!

Re: Bent shins?

I would not be overly concerned. Children's legs don't actually start to straighten out properly until around 30 months (2 1/2). As toddler's they don't actually have knee caps until much older and its the knee cap that helps hold everything in place.

The legs will straighten and the bones harden as they get older (bones are very soft when young). Keep checking with your doctor, if you are really worried ask for a referral to a paediatrician.

Once kids are totally out of nappies you start to see a change.

Re: Bent shins?

I wan't overly concerned as I know his older brother's legs straightened out, but you can actually see a bend in his shins just above his ankles. I will check with the doctor at 18 months & see what he says. Thankyou for your reassurance - it's hard when everyone keeps looking at him walk & telling me that it's not right & I need to get him looked at.

Re: Bent shins?

I posted above, but wanted to add that Jedd's is the same way. It looks like his shin is bent inward. It;s from the ankle bone. As long as the knee is straight the ankle will follow as the bone grows.
