Activities and outings for young toddlers

Hi all!  My little girl is amost 14 months old.  We are in need of activity/outing advice. We have joined playgroup and Kindergym which are great.  Does anyone have any more ideas for us? We read lots of books, sing lots of songs and go on lots of walks, but it does get a little repetitive no matter what I try.  Bubs can't walk yet but is very active and I want to encourage her physically and mentally.  Would visit more people but only have one friend with a child and the child is quite a bit older anyway, and everyone else works full time. Help!

Re: Activities and outings for young toddlers

Hi, If you have a Toy Library, JOIN!!! It's great. You can borrow a big item and two - four smaller items each time. They have outdoor play items such as cubby houses, climbing sets, slides, kitchen sets, trikes, etc... etc.. They also have puzzles, blocks, play sets, train sets, etc....It's great as you can swap over every 2 to 4 weeks. ( Downside is that you sometimes need a trailer or ute for larger items!!! )

The library is also great ( I think already mentioned) Wednesday afternoons here iskids day and they play games, puzzles and read stories.

Is there a reserve nearby with ducks etc ( When we visit relies down south there are a few of these around) we save all the bread crusts etc and head off to walk around the lake and feed the ducks.

One morning a week, once my cherub was 18 months old,  I used to visit the local pre-school when they had the 3 year old's in, and volunteer to help in the classroom. My little one used to come along and loved playing with the others - painting, playdough, stories, dressups, pasting, puzles etc...

Things will get a little easier (or a lot harder ) when your little girl starts to walk.  We love to go to the park with my kids and even before my little one could walk, he loved to just crawl around.  Also there are lots of other children at the park so the stimulation of seeing kids should help wear her out.  Good luck!

park-double dress if the ground is a bit wet.  but let her crawl around and play in the park.  swing!!!

go to the zoo

take some toys outside and have a play out there, have a picnic

Re: Activities and outings for young toddlers

* water play - set up a tub of water with plastic toys such as fish &/or boats

* swimming (lessons or not)

* sit her on the grass outside & let her feel the grass; find other things such as leaves with different textures - can do this at home or at the park

* want fun & messy? make goop - mix cornflour with water, mixing to consistency you want (the idea is for it to resemble thick paint); add little water at a time

* playdough - great for fine motor skills (using fingers to pinch & squeeze playdough together), develops strength in fingers

* you sing songs, do you make music? use anything (pots, plasticware, wooden spoons, etc) for instruments .... warning: do not do this when you have a headache, lol .... play along to the songs you sing

* I take it she is crawling? make her an obstacle course (gross motor skills). Depending on what is in your home, use things like beanbags, pillows, chairs, blankets, washing baskets .... anything she can crawl over, under, throw, into, out of, etc

* Blocks are another great activity for fine motor skills that this age group usually enjoys

Hope that helps.

Re: Activities and outings for young toddlers

Great ideas!  We do a lot of those things and have a great time too!  Any other ideas for things outside the house and garden, as we stay home an awful lot?  Looking for some "outside the home" activities in particular.  Thanks
