Eggs

I have concerns that my son my have egg allergies. We where up at the hospital after dinner last night. As he broke out in hives and hasn't recovered. My husband is with him on the ward. The hospital thinks it is eczema. He never had any swelling or breathing difficultys. What are the signs and symptoms.

Re: Eggs

If you are still in the hospital trying giving him a tiny tiny bit of eggs and see if it happens again..If it does.....then YEP....there is an allergy. I def. would not try that at home though, as the second dose of an allergen can be mush worse than the first one....

Re: Eggs

Sounds like allergies.  Especially if it happens shortly after eating the eggs.  He can have itching, swelling, hives.  He can have one or all of them and it can take up to 3 days for them to appear, depending on the severity of the allergy.  And it will go away within 3 days as well.  The only way to know for sure it to do a blood test for the allergy.  Good luck and hang in there.  I know what it's like.

Re: Eggs

My 2 year old has several food allergies, it sounds as though your son has an allergy, the hives are a huge clue, its doesnt always need to be accompanied by breathing difficulties. Ezcema and allergies often go hand in hand. Firstly I would go to your doctor and express your concerns, ask to be referred to a specialist. They can test for an egg allergy and measure the severity of it. I would completely avoid giving eggs again until you know for sure. My daughters allergies often result in a bad outbreak of ezcema after she has been exposed to a trigger (hers are animals, nuts, tomatoes, strawberries.. the list goes on). I hope your son recovers well, make sure they know that you think he has an allergy and imediately ask to be referred for skin testing. They can do it at any age. If you are worried about other foods, I would also recommend a food diary see if there is anything else you think he might be sensitive to. I know its scary having a baby in hospital especially if you arent certain of the cause. Good luck, Em xx

Re: Eggs

Quite probably it is - this is common and they may grow out of it, but try to avoid egg dishes (may be ok in baking cake, but you can try avoiding that too if it's still bad).

Keep a food diary and note when he reacts. Babies shouldn't have egg until a year really, but if exposed early and they reacted, delay it for another year. Talk to a health visitor if you want more info and background, or your doctor/nurse when you next are in.

Usually, our son used to react physically on his arms and legs in rashes, and bottom (and nappy!) and generally irritability. So far, he's also reacted to dairy products, too.
