toilet training

Hi,

I have a son who is almost 3. I have been toilet training him for at least 2-3 months now and we are having major issues in the number 2 department. He always poohs his pants and he does not tell me when he needs to do it and even after he has done it he won't tell me. I take him to to toilet when I think a pooh is due and he refuses to do one in the toilet and then the next thing I know he has done it in his pants. The wees are not too much of a issue. We still have at least 2-3 accidents a day still.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get him to do his number 2's in the toilet?

Thankyou to anyone that can help.

Re: toilet training

We had the same trouble with out older son (the youngest has been doing number 2 in the toilet since 6 months - he would scream until you sat him there to do it). It is very frustrating but they do eventually get there. Your son is around the same age as my son - almost 3 - and he has been fully wee trained (day & night) since 20 months but the number 2 took longer. I found a special Wiggles book that played their songs & had a drum thing on it that he could play along to the songs with & that seemed to do the trick - I gave it to him while he sat on the toilet & if he didn't poo I took it off him & put it somewhere he could see it but not get it, I did this once and he pooed in the toilet all the time after that. This was after trying everything I could think of & also trying the same thing with other things - this book must have just been his thing. We still have setbacks now occasionally but we just encourage him & tell him he's a big boy now & big boys poo in the toilet (we also use small toys as bribery if it gets bad - I get packs of animals or cars from a cheap shop, wrap them up & he gets one each time he goes in the toilet & if he goes in his pants I take one off him (thanks to a friend for this suggestion)). Good luck & if I can help more please minti mail me.

Re: toilet training

We have just beat all this with our 4 year old daughter.  What we did was got her special undies that she chose, and a new potty that was her poo potty.  So far, in 2 weeks, we have only had 1 small accident, though she is still in nappies overnight.

Try getting your son some special undies with the children's characters on them that he likes.  Tell him that he has to keep them dry and clean or you will have to throw them out.  Maybe get a new potty and try the approach we did.  I didn't expect a result with our girl, but it was an instant result with her which really blew us away.

Good luck with it all, and do be patient, these things do take time and it is best to let him choose the pace with the gentle encouragement from you.
