what to do

my eldest daughter has ADHD and has been under testing for the last 6 months because she ids to young for the meds which she will be starting at the end of the month but i am unsure if this is the right choicefor me and for her. I have done some looking in to it myself and have found some stuff that i believe might help her such as a behaviour guideance program but i have also found that there is a red food dye in most of the food we/she eats that could be causing the problem  what to do i have been trying to decied for the last 2 months but i dont have much time left

i have thought of taking all the food with the dye away but if did that there isnt much left that i could give her

Re: what to do

I would try and eliminate any artificial colours and flavours from your diet (  the whole family -so that not only one is missing out!) I know my cherub cannot have any artificial red colours or flavours or blue / green. It sends her off her rocker!!! ( This is included in many snack foods, muesli bars, chips, lolllies, fruit drinks, cereals, cordials etc..) If you read packaging, it is possible to find alternatives. We still have treats, but only those that are "safe", There is also a program run in Australia ( not sure about elsewhere called DORE. It is having huge results with children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. Well worth looking at. If you don't have to medicate your child, it is much better. But if you have tried all other options and your child needs help, then work with their doctor to make sure dosages etc are fine

Re: what to do

My youngest daughter has a behavior problem (not medicated)....

There are many ways you can help control it, it take a lot of time and paitience.....

I have used diet control and fish oil to help my daughter, and with a strong will you can do it....

There is a book 'FED UP' writen by Sue Dengate.... a great book....

If you would like more info or just want to talk.... please feel free to minti mail me.... i have been doing this for 4 years now.....

Keep your chin up....

Cheers Frogie xx

Re: what to do

It's really a matter of experimenting with different foods (ie different preservatives, dyes, etc) to see what affects your son & what doesn't.

Some kids cope well with medication, some don't. My son is on Ritalin & is great on it. He only takes one tablet per day & that's all I will keep it at. It keeps him settled enough, especially for school. He has days when I feel like giving him more, lol, but I won't ever do that.

Some years ago I was in a health food store & mentioned my child being on ADHD medication. I was shown some sort of natural product (am sure it was a liquid) that I was told most kids with ADD/ADHD who took it did not need any other medication. The reason I did not try it is because I could not afford it. The store assitant said it is all natural & is very good. As I said, that was some years ago, but may be worth seeing if it is still available.

Re: what to do

My son had ADD as well as autistic and we were told to give him Ritilin (he was 4 at the time) it made him into a zombie and scared the hell out of me and his teachers. i immedeatly took him off them. i looked into the foods that cause it and found that alot of breads have preservitive 282 and 202 and a few others so we only by preservitive free bread. i buy either tip top or bakers delight (that a bakery in perth. i dont know if it is anywhere lese in Australia).

also apple juice sets them off and you know about the food dyes.

try and get her to eats loads of vegies and fruit (perserver if she doesnt like them) and iron rich meats. Also give her time to be "her" and also there are programs to help ADD children tearn to cope and train themself to behave.

good luck

Liz
