toilet training

has anyone had trouble toilet training their toddlers??  We attempted it this week and it started out great, we had a party every time he did a little wee or poo in the potty but it has deterioated day by day.

He used to do a wee in the bath every single night with out fail and he thought this was hilarious but since weeing in the potty he freaks out if he wees in the bath.  Last night he pitched a fit like nothing else and had to get out of the bath.

This morning he wouldnt go anywhere near the potty.  Its like he understands what wee and poo is now and he;s disgusted by it.  He also freaked out at the last poo he did in there.  Almost as if it scared him that something was falling out of his body.???

Anyone had similar experiences?

Re: toilet training

My son (now 22 mths) would use the potty before his baths from 11 months old to around 15 months then he realised he could get off it easily and will not sit on it anymore and he hates the toilet.

He will tell me when he is wet (which also means dirty)  but he is just not ready to be potty trained. I am in no great hurry for him to be potty trained yet so I am hoping it will come from him when the time is right. In our case, I have noticed that the more we suggest the potty to him the less he wants to use it.. it is there and he knows where it is.

Yup, big problems with our 4 year old.  Thankfully, she is finally using the potty and we've only had one accident!

How did we do it?  We bought a special potty just for her.  Told her it was the magic poo potty.  We also got special undies for her with the characters she likes on them.  Now, there is no stopping her!  She wants to keep the undies dry and clean as she knows if they get dirty, I'll throw them out!  Big incentive for her.

Checking your profile, your son is only 1, so there is no rush!  Let him take his time with it.  At his age, he still hasn't realised when he is wet yet, so just be patient.  You will know soon enough when he is ready, he'll start telling you he's done a poo or wee in his nappy.  That's when the real efforts should be put in.

I hear ya!!

My little boy was a very late toilet trainer.  He does the same thing, the freaking out, and sometimes gets upset that he has to wear jocks instead of nappies.

I found a book called  "Cailou's Potty Time"  very helpful.  Its a book about a little boy who starts potty training.  After that book, it was easy to relate my son's experiences with those of the little boy in the book.

The best thing to do is keep on trying, keep giving positive reinforcement, and remember that what you're doing is very hard.  But you're a Mummy - YOU CAN DO IT!

Re: toilet training

Honestly what is happening is completely normal - I am told especially for boys. I have 2 boys & the oldest asked to start training at 17 months. It was a long & frustrating journey but it did finally happen around 20 months, but the bowels took longer. We have a 15 month old that is partially trained too, & that was his own doing too as he refused to poo in his nappy from 6 months & now only wets up to 4 nappies a day (usually only 1 or 2) - going to the toilet the rest of the time They do go backwards & forwards a lot but one day it just clicks & they are trained! Saying this they can still have setbacks, just make sure you don't get angry and praise praise praise when he does go! Keep doing what you are doing as you are on the right track!

Re: toilet training

I am currently tt my boy too, he lets me know when he needs to go and we go sit on the potty but to no avail. Put a nappy on and he will go immediately. If we leave him with no nappy he will go hide and do it in the cupboard. No 1 and 2. My sil said she had the same prob with her son and has been lead to blieve it is a possesion thing. Sorry, that is all I have but if you come up with some answers please feel free to share.

Cheers. Karen. xx.

Re: toilet training

His daycare lady told me it was a "boy" thing??  She rekons it is common for boys to freak out at what their body spits out??  Who knows.  I might just give it a rest and try again in a few months.  He is only 22months, just thought i would give it a go.

Re: toilet training

Same age as my boy. I just keep offering the potty to him and will see how he goes. Make a huge fuss when he does use it tho'.

Re: toilet training

Here's an idea that might sound a bit yuck but it might help. The next time you or your hubby goes, let your little one watch, or show him afterward. Say something like, "look! daddy did a poo in the toilet, what a good daddy, now flush it away, all gone"

Try a star chart. Each time he goes in potty or toilet let him put a star on his chart. After so many stars, he gets a reward. A friend of mine used this method to train her son & it worked a real treat. She had the chart next to the toilet for her son to put the stars on.

When he does go, make sure you really praise him for it. Tell others when he's around what a good boy he was going to the potty/toilet. I'm sure you do give him praise, I just mean really ham it up.

Re: toilet training

Have tried all of that except the star chart.  We have been warming him up to toilet training for a few months now.  He was watching us on the toilet for a while and I would tell him I was doing wee wee then I bought him a baby toilet seat to put on the toilet and he would sit on it every night before his bath.  Trouble with that was he used to stick his head in the toilet and i would tell him it was yucky so when he sat on the toilet and i told him to do wee wee he would tell me it was "kucky".  so we bough him the little floor potty last week and there started the story.

As for the praise, well lets just say it was party time in potty town and any one with in ear shot had to come in and jump up and down.  He would do a wee then clap.
