Hi Lisa,

There are a few things that Hannah should be doing before you go down that path.

  • dry after naps
  • telling you when she poos/pees
  • have the ability to pull down her pants
  • ability to follow simple directions

I am sure there are some others, but have a search around to find the ques she can show you that she is ready.

For Harrison, he had some of the cues and not others.  So I went ahead and got a potty adn just had it around the house.  At first he didn't like it and didn't want to sit on it.  I had it in the bathroom with me and asked him if he wanted to sit on the potty when I did.  When he kept saying no, I just stuck it in the living room and eventually he started riding on it like a car and even stuck it on his head as a hat (eewwww).  And then a couple of times, he said pee and we took off the diaper and sat him down but nothing.  Until the other night.  He peed in his potty.  Hasn't done it since but we will get there.

Just go with Hannah's cues.  Good luck.

Angela

Most babies are trained between 1 1/2 to 2 years. But some train younger, some older, it depends on the child. Give her a try with it, see how she goes. If she is too reluctant with it, wait a little longer.

Does she recognise the fact she is doing wee's and poo's. If she can tell you then this is a good sign. I'd have the potty there for a while just so she can sit on it even with a nappy. Then when she is familiar, try without the nappy maybe half an hour after drink or food. The main point is not to stress about it but praise, praise and more praise when she goes on the potty. A star chart is great for this. It will take time, accidents and the occasional backward step but she'll get the hang of it. If she shows no interest then wait a bit longer.

You can try at anytime you are ready. The reason i say when you are ready is because you need to keep a good eye onthem incase they have accidents.. Definetly after 18months is fine, i know plenty of ppl who have toilet trained girls from this age, boys is a little harder tho..  Just try her out to see if shows interest in it.
