sugar free diet please help

I got a phone call from my sons teacher(grade 4) yesterday as his behavior at school is shocking apparently, at school he is a attention seeker!!!!!.prob is and wouldnt suprise me...so i thought what could i do.  One of the ideas i had was to change his diet. That was for the fact that he is on a contract now where he is being assesed 3 times a day one in the morning which he is fine.next after recess(naughty)and after lunch(naughty). so i am thinking its his diet i dunno i think its worth a try. What do all you think. any suggestions.

i would like some suggestions for sugar free lunches for school aswell.

thanks tassie.

my son is easily lead the wrong way.      you say  jump he says how high!!!!!!

Hi Tassie! I just had a thought, which you might want to come back to if the diet doesnt help - what's he like when he's with the other kids? Does he get all hyped up running around at recess & lunch and then maybe struggle to calm down again in time for sitting still in class? Looking at what you're feeding him, it seems pretty healthy, so I just wondered if it is just that he gets too hyped up and the teachers need to help him to calm down again before they expect him to pay attention? Just a thought! Good luck!

It might be something else too, I dont know alot about it, but I saw a show on tv about a child and an adult that both had reactions to gluten.  Also some react to red food dye, It seems your child is eating healthy to me.  Try googling gluten allergys.    Also is there something else that could be triggering this behavior?  Another student or boredom?  Good luck!

A sugar free diet doesn't always work.  i was a hyper child and my parents swapped sugar for Equal (sugar substitute) and what would you know?  I was even worse on it!

I think teachers are too quick to make it a parents responsibilty that they the teachers can't deal with his behaviours.  Sure, letting you know that they are having issues with him is good so that you can see if there are things that you can do, but more areas need to be explored before ruling him an unruly child.

What's he like at home?  Our 5 year old daughter is very subdued and cooperative at school, but you get her home and I wouldn't be surprised if she behaves like your son does at school.

Re: sugar free diet please help

His problem is its a small school like 150 students max he is in a 4/5 class he is year 4 i wish he was in a 3/4 class but his teacher dosnt think its a problem....he clashes with old ladys as teachers i learnt this while we were in tassie, when we moved to vic he was fantastic had teachers fresh out of uni,now in nsw has an oldie i just dont think that they have the patients now days...his class is a big class of 24 students 18 would be boys even more.he is a boy and all boys try and out do each other they all think they are better than one another etc.......i will try and do something about it,well atleast try on my behalf he has ground rules aswell now....me being so young 28,we let him do whatever he wants go to be whenever but he has abused that so i told him i am going to be like majority of his friends mums(a little older) and have rules bed 7.30 no play after school homework etc etc.i said if he can show me effort i will consider lifting some of my rules its so hard having a child who at this age thinks he knows everything etc when really i am not that much older

Re: sugar free diet please help

gosh i must be werid or something cause i am so strict with my kids. they are in bed by 7pm and asleep. I am so strict with what they eat too. and i am a very young mum as i am 25.

i think alot of behavour problems are due to lack of boundaries. my kids have a very tight bounary and they know when they go over it but i have to be this way with my son with his autism.

good luck with the new behavour ideas. i hope they work for you.

I've also noticed that the younger parents kids get picked on by the older teachers.  It does seem as though the dinosaurs teaching your son have not kept up with the times.  Who knows, maybe they will be extinct soon to and he can have a more modern teacher.

Having a schedule will help.  It will also teach him time management and personal responsibility.  Have it running with a rewards chart and you might find he takes to it and starts making more of a concious effort to change his behaviours.

Good luck, I'm so glad I only have girls, although......teen years are going to be fun!

Hi Tassie,

I hope this post finds you well.

I totally agree with the others its the preservitives that are the problem.

How do this its a slow process im sorry but its the power of elemination. My mother had to do it with me, she found that red and green colouring's eg red codial or lime cordial, chocolate, peanut butter and coke all sent me troppo.

What is he buying at school at the canteen if anything?

I hope this helps  good luck

Re: sugar free diet please help

what does he have at school?

what does he eat?

what bread do you use?

what drinks does he have?

it isnt always sugar that does this. preservatives are killers.

we had to take all preservative out of my sons diet as he was a phsyco. now we have done that he is manageable. we dont give him anything that isnt natural so LCM, roll ups muslie bars with chocolate is out and chips ect. all he has for lunch is a vegimite and cheese sandwhich or meat sandwhich and fruit.
