My baby is 13 weeks old and usually has 2 poo's a day but he has not had one for 2 days now. He is breastfed. Should i be concerned? Is there something i could/should give him to help him go? He has been a little unsettled but doesn't seem to be in any pain. 3 days ago i was taking painkillers (paracetemol/codeine) for a migraine could this have caused him to be constipated?
Yes, breastfed babies can go that long without pooing but.....
the codine WILL constipate a child. Jedd was on Tylenol wiht Codine after his heart surgery by a prescription. We were told to wean him to reg. tylenol as sson as we could because the codine will cause constipation isues.
Try not to worry as it is very common for breast fed bubs to often go 4-7 days without pooping . . I spoke to a midwife friend as she said not to worry until around day 7 BUT if you were at all concerned she suggested using something natural like some water with brown sugar mixed in OR some Prune juice . . She warns against using Coloxyl drops etc as this can cause bubs bowels to become lazy . .
Okay, after an extensive search on minti it seems I'm the only person that has written an advice specifically dealing with all the biological ins and outs of babies in detail. I'm starting to think there's something seriously wrong with the way my mind works now! I've tried to link it above, hope it works.
Note: in the advice I say breastfed babies may be constipated if they haven't pooped after 4 days, that's just an average though. Better to say that and have concerned parents take a trip to a doctor to make sure when the first day 5 comes around, than to say 10 days and have parents leave their babies badly constipated for days because they read and took heed of my advice! Every baby is different. I reckon they do that just to freak us parents out all the time. LOL
Codiene can cause constipation in you, so naturally, breastfed bubs is going to get it too. I wouldn't worry unless he is overly unsettled or is in pain.
We have to look after ourselves too, so that we can be there to look after our little ones.
We had the same problem with our grandson. We took him to the doctors and they said that the baby is only drinking milk and therefore he does not have to poo everyday. He will however wee a lot. If by the 3rd or 4th day nothing happens we just add about 2.5mm Olive oil to one of his bottles and there you go, it happens. They say it is a natural product and will not affect baby at all.
1 month!? i coudln't imagine goign one month without pooing lol, i'm thinking of the upside....not dirty nappies for you to deal with, and the amount of nappied you saved on :P poor bubs though. hope she was ok
