Re: Constipation

We've been told by health professionals in the past that a teaspoon of soft brown sugar in the bottles for a few days will help to shift things along.

Preventing it, we were told to add an extra measure of water to the bottle.

Re: Constipation

I dont know if this tip will help it depends on the cause for constipation. However our daughter was a tad constipated on Formula and the Health visitor felt that the milk was too concentrated for her, so advised us to add an extra ounce of water to the mix, and initially to get her bowel moving to let her sip prune juice, ratio 1oz Juice -10oz boiled water for a couple of days. It worked for us, Ruth was about 7 weeks old at the time. Best wishes.

Re: Constipation

cheleinkal advice is excellent

fish oil almost certainly solve the issues, it worked for our little one.  She is now 21 months and used to a have a few hard pellets for a while until we tried fish oil.

It also woked during pregnancy for constipation, I think a few mothers get this?

However we did not use normal fish oil, we used organic natural Cod Liver Oil, as we found this woked even better than straight fish oil.  This also gives mother and baby the vitamins they need I think it woks like was mentioned by changing the structure of the stool but also by moisturising the membrane tissue in the body, like the lining of the rectum so that the stool has an easier passage.

Here is a great link on these and other benefits of Cod Liver Oil, it seems like our grandmother's were right :)

Another thing to consider is the baby formula itself, perhaps that could be a source of problems.  Below is a link to the formula we used for our daughter Eliška

All the best

Re: Constipation

I would not give your baby anything at that age.  Primarily because her digestive system is still maturing and it may lead to problems later.  Having said that most babies can go several days without pooing whether bottle or breast feed.  And Breastfeed babies can go up to 10 days with out a bowl movement.  Since they are only taking liquids, there really is not much solid waste, so I would not worry if she does not go every day.  What you want to look for is her being in pain, straining with lots of effort and no pooing, over 4-5 days without pooing and a bloated belly.  If you see any of that I would call the doc/nurse.  You can give her rice water, only if its been several days to help move things along.  All you do for the rice water is put some rice in a pan and cook it until it browns.  Then mix it with water.  Pour the water in a bottle and give it to her.  But again, babies at this age won't always go every day.  My son still does not go everyday and he is 8m and on solid food.

Re: Constipation

hi

my advice to you is to go to your gp or peddie and talk to them about what you are able to give her, as there isn't anything that i'm aware of that you can give a baby of that age. but do it soon, the longer you leave it the harder it will be for her to do one.

we are going through the same with gecko-buba but he's 2 and hasn't been able to do a poo since November last year without been heavily medicated and half the medication he's on a child of his age shouldn't be having, and when he's not on the meds it can take up to a week for him to do one and when he does it takes 4hrs of crying and screaming to push out something that looks like a cement ball and is as hard as one too, and is the size of your fist. he's also had 2 op's for it and is just about to go in for another one in the next few weeks.

good luck and i hope that she is able to do a poo soon.
