Hi Dee,  I know how you feel.  My daughter used to get nits all the time while in Primary school and she has long hair,  I tried everything you can possibly buy.  The best thing I used is a 'Robicomb'.  It is battery operated and cost roughly $60 from the Chemist.  Use it everyday before school and after school for as long as you want to.  I swear by it as my daughter never had nits since I used it.  She is now in High School and hasnt had nits for over 3 years.

I also agree with washing everything is hot water.

i guarentee that clove oil does the trick... add with a little water and tea tree also if you like. i have always found clove oil to work if you drop it on and leave for a few hours

hello,my daughter had them also but finally cleared them..

put conditioner in his head.. conditioner smothers them and then comb them out..

i put comb through tays head and showed she had none,she said mummy my heads itchy so when she went for a shower i washed ehr hair when condition i recomb and there they was 4 of the rotten creatures..

make sure u wash all bedding .put in heat...or they will return....before school put conditioner in a spray bottle and spray or his or her head.... some of tays was like pindots.goodluck

Wow guys,you all have great ideas on how to get rid ofhe nasty little buggers. Thank you to everyone, they are all gfone but will keep up on the conditioner treatments. Oh 7 arna please cant I smother Brad at the same time???lol

20 minutes, a good lice comb and a large bottle of cheap conditioner, smother dry hair in conditioner, quickly brush out all the tangles, then go through with the lice comb and physically remove the little sods and their eggs, then rinse, dry, done. Lice can't live off the human head for very long, so you don't need to poison them. This method works better than any chemical product if you do it right, and it can be repeated as often as necessary, even as soon as you can get the hair dry again if you aren't confident that you didn't get them all the first time. It's also safer, cheaper, smells better, is easier, quicker, cleaner, and better for the environment. I do my kids hair once a month regardless of whether they have any, just to be sure.

Its important to get ALL the eggs. They glue them to the hair so you need to get a product that targets the eggs. Then comb comb comb! Treatment needs to be done at least three times to break the breeding cycle.

Bedding, hats, brushes and any soft toys that are on the bed need washing in hot water.

Its also recommended to treat the whole family.And make sure  to trace the source or they can come back into contact.

I've been told that the best treatments are the ones that you use on a regular basis any way.  The really thick and expensive conditioners are supposedly very good.

You wash hair as normal, grab conditioner, drown the hair in it, including down at the base of the neck, and then wrap in plastic (resisting the urge to gag them while they are protesting! lol) and leave over night.

Now, this doesn't actually poison the lice and nits, but smothers them.  The lice/nits need to breathe too, but by smothering them like this, they can't!  Oh, it is recommended that you do it every night for at least 14 nights in a row.

Thank you to everyone. Have condition in his hair with a shower cap on at the moment, its ben on for a few hours, then will comb it with eycalyptus oil,will keep trying everyones great suggestions until all the little buggers are gone!!

A friend of mine who was working with kids got nits a couple of years back & tried all kinds of expensive chemicals from the chemist. I think the most she paid for a product was $49 for a pack including a fancy comb... None was successful.  Since I was applying the gunk, I was sufferring from the fumes (eyes running; breathing problems etc) so I can't imagine what she was going thru! In the end I picked up an info leaflet from my chemist to find out about the life-cycle. Seems that whatever you use to kill the lice themselves (regardless of what the package says) doesn't actually kill the eggs (nits). So the trick is to re-apply the gunk when all the eggs have had a chance to hatch into lice (adult lice vaguely resemble flying ants) but haven't yet matured enuff to lay more eggs. So armed with that knowledge, I used 2 bottles of Tea-Tree Oil.. The correct number of days apart. So as to be sure, I got her to leave it in for a full 24 hours & said she should sleep in a showercap so as not to stain her pillows... just after rinsing out each application I got her to put conditioner thru her hair & I dragged the (metal) fine-toothed nit comb thru it to dislodge the eggs. You won't need to do that bit. That's only for long hair. It worked, was cheaper than anything else & didn't cause me any grief to do it... 70 years ago, people used kerosine & shaved the head. So probably anything that's finely oily & has a very strong smell will kill them. The info leaflet says they suffocate. Just pick up a leaflet to get the right times!

Hi Dee, I know the feeling as we have the same trouble at the moment! I discovered them in Oscar's hair on Wednesday & Jack & I have them too! YUCK! I made my own stuff - 100ml thick conditioner with 5 drops of each Eucalyptus, Tea Tree and Lavender oils, put it on the roots & rub through, leave for an hour then comb out. I also got a Robi Comb from the chemist just to be sure (they are dear though $60) and am using that twice a day for 2 weeks. I am doing the conditioner thing everyday until I am sure they are gone. Also the eggs stick really bad so pour vinegar ( I know it sounds horrible) over his head, leave for a minute they rinse - this loosens the glue the lice use to stick the eggs to the hair & most of them will just wash down the drain. Also you can make a solutionto spray in his hair everyday as a deterrent - fill a spray bottle with water & put in 5 drops of each of the oils again & just spray in every morning. You can also spray beds & furniture with these to help rid them. Good luck hunni

get a shower cap and conditioner. cover and leave for a few hours. then comb out. if that doesnt work try and pick out with fingers. tea tree oil and euculiptus oil works well too.

OH gosh you have me itching just thinking about it. I'm surprised the shaving didnt get work, but I was told once to cover the hair with conditioner and then use the little lice comb to get it out.
But tea-tree oil is also good, and so is mint apparently. But i cant remember where I got that from!
good luck, remember not to use too many things one after the other otherwise you could damage their scalps!

Hi there. I usually use eucalyptus oil, and that kills then straight away. I put the oil in so it covers the bottom of the jug  and fill up 3 /4 with water, and run this through their hair, and leave it in for about 10 minutes, and then rince, and put lavender conditioner through their hair to make it soft and knot free, and you can easily get all the nits out.

I would have thought the shaving would have definately done it! The comb that I used to use on my kids was very fine. I put oil in first. I think it was tea tree oil, basically the natural stuff from the chemist. If the hair is still a little long it should be done for 7 days. It must be the eggs stuck. The nits should definately be dead from all that solution. LOL I used to shave my kids to a number 2 to keep them away. The beauty of having boys. LOL
