in pain

hi,

last night, I made my husband go get me some formula at midnight, i could not take the pain anymore, however my Q is, I have a lot of milk, my breasts hurt and tingle even if I sneeze, so how do I relieve the pain, plus cut down my supply in the most quickest painless way, without encouraging more supply. I successfully breastfed my other 2 girls,  but for some reason my 1 week old girl has got a wicked suck and has inflicted so much pain on me, so she is going on the bottle full time so can someone please help me save my boobs???

Re: in pain

I'm going to add a link to the related content tab for you on a product that might help you to keep up with the breastfeeding with minimal discomfort.

Every baby is different, and it could be that you are experiencing an attatchment problem, so might be a good idea to talk to a midwife about that.

Re: in pain

I would go with what the others advice..

But also would add drink loads of coke and eat heaps of chocolate as well as that will dry up your milk... As i was told that by a mothercraft  nurse to cut back on it when i fed brodie..

Re: in pain

If the pain is as bad as you describe, you may have mastitis. I had it with my third child & it is very painful! If your breast feels lumpy, or you notice blood in the milk (I only noticed that when I burped bub & she brought a bit back up, as babies usually do), then get checked by a doctor. If it's mastitis antibiotics will clear it.

Other than that, just what others have said: warm shower, massage, cabbage leaves. Maybe try a putting a heat pad on them, even if you hold a hot water bottle against them may help.

Hope it feels better soon!

Re: in pain

ohhh it has been a while but i remember this feeling.. i had to posture feed both my children.. i had a baby that was stillborn and i had to stop the milk flowing as it really upset me everytime.. cus no baby for the milk.. the dr gave me tablets but they only worked when i took them.. and because of the medical problems they could cause i couldnt take more then two courses of them.. i went to an old fashioned remedy of binding them.. i got a stretch bandage and kept them binded (day and night)until the milk was gone.. they say to put cabbage leaves on them but i didnt do that.. only the binding.. hope this helps.. kind regards sharon

Re: in pain

You cant cut back your supply cause what you take out, fills back up-with my first child i tried breastfeeding for a week and hated it.i was told to leave them and let them dry up,me not knowing was in pain and let some out not knowing that i was back at square 1. My next 2 children i just let them dry up the last 1 only took a couple of days.you can get tablets but they dont encourage them anymore i dont think..i just let mine dry up on there own it dosnt take long

good luck tassie

Re: in pain

i think it's wonderful that you've got heaps of milk and are able to breastfeed. i could only breast feed for 6 weeks, cameron and i were just having too much trouble and it was best for both of us to bottle feed, but i really wished i could have breastfed for a year.

it sounds like you're boobs are engorged (ie too much milk). i know with weanign to stop engorgement you just express til you're comfortable, not til you're empty otherwise it'll promote MORE milk, you only want to express to releive the preassure not make more milk, so that can help. the cabbage leave trick is a good one for the heat, and another one i heard was cutting nappie in half and putting some water in it so it puffed up then freezing it, when it's cold you put half on each boob. similar principle :P

Re: in pain

Hi,

If you have lots of milk then you will need to express it. Only express it when you are really full. If you don't get rid of the milk then you run the risk of developing mastitis.

Get something from the chemist for your nipples and they will feel better in about a week.

Good Luck, Ihope that helps,

Juzzy xoxo

Re: in pain

To help with the heat, buy a large cabbage. Break the leaves off, put them in the freezer and then stick them in your bra......it's heaven to hot sore boobs. But as Libby said, go see your Doctor.

Re: in pain

hot showers and massage. your milk will be coming in and that is the pain. if u honestly want to give up feeding go and see your doc as they can give you some meds to stop the milk.
