We use a Vicks Cool Mist humidifier. It works great and is vey quiet. I also like the fact aht it is a cool one....that wya you don't have to worry about being burnt by how steam.

The one we have even has a compartment for a Vick's vapor pad to be placed and it dispenses the vapours into the air in the room all done at hte same time...!!!!

I have one called a Hippo, we bought it when our 6 month old was little and got a cold.  It is good in the fact that you can see how much water it has left in it and I did a test only yesterday to see what would happen when the water ran out and it shut itself off.  it is pretty quiet as well, it also has a part in the top of it where you can put like eucalyptus oil but I went to the chemist the other day and asked how old they have to be before you can use that part and the Chemist man said all those oils even ones designed for it are really a waste of money as its the steam that helps... not sure if thats true or not but because bub is still only little for the moment I wont' use any.

I have the vicks one and I don't find it loud.  Another thing I like about it is that it reduces the heat of the steam, so you don't get burnt by it.
