Ear Candling

We have recently tried ear candling on our son (5) who was complaining of a blocked ear.  He said he did feel much better after it and we did find a big clump of wax in the candle - after which he had complained that his ear was 'itchy' during the burning of that particular segment of the candle.  Both my husband and I are dubious of the whole ear candling thing and think it is a hoax, but a small element of doubt leads us to believe that it must have helped Ash in some way.  So we both tried it tonight.

There are so many conflicting articles and opinions (including safety issues and potential burning of the eardrum from dripping wax, which doesn't seem to happen but maybe on a not so well made candle?) on several websites.  I just want to know what you guys think.

Are they safe?  Are they doing any actual good?  Is it really possible that a piece of wax close to 1 inch long could come from a 5 year old's ear?

Re: Ear Candling

I don't know anything about ear candling but it doesn't sound too safe. When my son was younger he suffered a lot of ear infections & his doctor told me to put a hair dryer on a low setting & blow it into the ear (obviously not right against the ear, hold it back a bit). The idea being to allow warm air into the ear, this helps melt the wax so it drains away easier.

If my ear feels blocked I do this & it does help!

Re: Ear Candling

I think that I would be quite reluctant to try this.It sounds very unreliable and could potentially do a lot of harm. Have you not tried warm olive oil for a few nights. My son has problems with blocked ears due to wax build up and I find that this helps. If it is really bad he may need meds from the doctor.
