Problems with sleeping and breast feeding Please help...

Hi all,

I am a 27yr old mother of 3 girls, my first 2 were great sleep through the night from around 2-6 weeks old and never had a problem weaning from the breast, my 3rd one however is now 1 and half and i have managed to get her off the breast during the day but night time is another story, she still wakes around 7 times a night and some nights does not come of at all, I am finding it very hard to get any sleep, i have tried the crying thing and she just cries to the point of throwing up and keeps going, i cant have her do that,:( she refuses to take the bottle we have tried hours at a time and she just keeps crying and crying until she gags and throws up, this is very disturbing, the doctor said it is a comfort thing so i have tried holding her when she wakes up, but she just keeps going for the breast, i need sleep and so does she, she also very rarely sleeps during the day, i hope there is someone out there that can help me.......and she still sleeps in my bed with hubby, :(

try putting a little honey and salt around your nipple. the salt is meant to turn her of. The honey  is to help the salt stick. A friend of mine used this trick when she fell pregnant whilst breastfeeding

That is tough  - you have all my sympathy! My 19 month old is still waking approx 3x (think it's been good if its only 2x!) and I can just about survive on that. When she's ill, then it's 6+x, and Im a zombie! DH is in the spare room most of the time. I reduced my DD1s night waking down to 0 with advice from "The No Cry Sleep Solution". Im not desperate enough to use it with DD2, yet anyway! The author had a baby who woke hourly I think. Anyway, it has lots of ideas, so you can pick'n'mix & see if anything helps, all with minimal crying! Good luck!

Hi there

Wow, you really are having a hard time! My son was breastfed until just recently (coz he bites) and he was very much the same. He was waking every hour - hour and a half and the only way i could settle him back to sleep was with a feed.

What i did, was buy a tomee tipee bottle that has a very wide nipple, just like a breast. It is also a little softer than a normal nipple and i expressed and fed him from that. I did that at his night time feed until he got used to drinking from a bottle.

If it is you and your hubby that she is used to getting comfort from, maybe you could try putting a shirt of yours and his in her cot. Sometimes the smell is all it will take to help her settle back to sleep.

Other than that, all i can suggest is controlled crying. It is hard. But it works sometimes. It did for me.

Good luck. I hope you get some sleep soon. xox

Hi,

You sound like you really have your hands full. Firstly can you try and put her in a cot? She might be waking up when you or hubby are moving around. Maybe try and give her a bottle of milk rather than breast. Only give her a bottle for the first wake up. It sounds like she just wants to comfort feed. I know the controlled crying thing is hard and it actually doesn't work for some kids (my son).

Hope this helps, Good Luck

Juzzy
