Re: Flying with a baby.
My husband and I flew 2 hours when our son was 18 months old and boy, that was tough!! It may not have been so bad, but our son's temperament played a big role. He's not one to want to sit for very long, especially at this age.
This said, here some things that could make your trip more bearable and easier to handle:
- pack plenty of new toys. Perhaps you can go to a dollar store and buy some things (safety in mind of course)
- get an aqua doodle. This is a coloring paper/pen, but the pen only has water.
- get tiny sugar free lollipops (but make sure you have a bib and wipes with you, as this can get messy)
- bring books
- bring tylenol (acetaminophen) for little aches
- don't bring toys that have too many tiny pieces or pieces that rolll (you'll be chasing after them if you do)
- bring plenty of snacks (fruit chews, gummies are great)
- bring a sippy cup!
- bring plenty of pacifiers (or clip them) if your child uses a paci
For a 19 hour trip, it would be better if you got your child a seat. This is a long trip to have a child on your lap the whole time. Plus, during meals, it would be hard for both of you to eat if you need to use the tray. But this said, since you're on an overseas flight, it's more likely that the plane wouldn't be full. So you the flight attendants will probably let you move to a row that has seats that are unoccupied.
Prepare yourself mentally that unexpected things will happen and that's alright.
I wanted to change my son's diaper during this 2 hour flight. But when I took him to the lavatory, it was too small. He would fit in there. Thankfully, he only had a wet diaper so I decided to go ahead and wait until we landed. If I had to change him, I would have had to change him on teh floor in the isle!
