You could also perhaps talk to her school? Get the whole class involved.  I rememebr in about year 4 we had penpals from a school in America and it was great to write about the different things we were doing and also how alike we were.

I have a daughter too that is 9 and she is always hounding me to get emails and write letters.  I think its a great idea to have the kids do things like that.  It doesnt' hurt them to learn how to write proper letters.  We too are in Australia.  Depends where you are I may be able to get your daughter a spanish pen pal as well as my cousin is an english teacher over there.
