I have a 6 month old grandson. Every time he goes to the doctor, he gets 2-4 innoculations in his thigh. Is this normal? When my children were babies, they would get one shot during a visit, and then, not every visit. This really disturbs me. i thinkl it is cruel. One innoculation is bad enough, but 4 at one time!!!!!!!!
Yes this is very normal. They have added several shots since I was a baby, for polio, chicken box, etc. Even since I have my girl 3 years ago they have added a innoc for the rotavirus. It seems mean, but really what is better knowing your brandchild is protected from these deseases that can cause great harm or a few minutes of pain? Sorry it's rough sounding, but that is why they have the shots. They do combine several shot into one, so it's not as bad as getting one shot for one virus. And really every check up for the first year of life is to get the shots, whether the first set or boosters. Hang in there, it's for a good reason.
The immunisation is given at 2 mths, 4 mths, 6 mths, 12 mths, 18 mths and then 4 years. My 6 month old has had two injections and a bit of syrip until her last one which was just the injections. She never had 4 at one time.
If you think it's too much for him to handle you can always ask the ped. to stretchout the shots. Our DS has some medical issues and thye have stretched his schedule of shots out farther than a normal child's. This helps him out greatly AND he still gets all his pokes, eventually..LOL
DS has VERY severe reflux he is DXed with GERD (GORD for the Aussies..LOL) so gettign all his shots at one time causes him to have a reflux flare, a pretty nasty one actually.
In the US, there is vaccinations done until about 3 years old. Our pediatrician's office sees babies every 3 months until 18 months, and then every year. On my son's 3rd year is the only time he didn't get a shot. Within the first year, it is normal to get shots 2 per thigh.
They also seem to introduce more innoculations to the PBS every year or so. So with my eldest he wasn't vaccinated for as many things as my youngest has been. I guess it's a personal choice whether or not to have them done or to have some but not all.
Not sure where you're located, but here's the US immunization schedule. You can see there are quite a few for the first year. There are several that they have to get in two or three doses for it to be effective. It's completely normal.
Just remember, the little cruel stick of pain that bothers them for only a little bit in infinitely better than the days of pain and discomfort they'd suffer if they had to get that illness, right?
