alternatives to playgroups

hi there,

my little one goes to childcare tues to friday, monday is our day together.  I would like to  continue some sort of activity outside the home for afew hrs to be around other kids and people have suggested playgroup? have never been....is it very similar to a childcare outside play area? should i book him in at our local playgroup or are there alternatives to stimulate a 15 month old.  have thought about booking him into a music group, what do others think? what other groups operate for babies between 15months and 2 years?

Re: alternatives to playgroups

Playdates at a local coffee shop are great.  I don't know if you have like kiddie gyms in your area, but those are nice too.  They get to have unorganized, organized play.  Even just going to the park where you know there are alot of kids is great.  Babies at this age are not into playing together, just yet, they would rather watch others play as they play, so anywhere there are kids you are going to score big time for him developementally.  Also, music classes are great but find one that is not to structured as you may become more frustrated then happy.  My Sis was in one, and she was about 3, it was the yougest they would take.  Good luck!

there is an unstructured music class nearby and they do take them at 1 up ....however might just continue the play thing for now, coffee meetups are great but difficult to do on a monday as most people are busy with errands .....i think the kindy gym will be the go

Re: alternatives to playgroups

have you thought about playdates rather than an organised group? we have found it to be lots better for our kids when they were little because it isn't over stimulation, just one or two good friends to play with in a familiar place without all that comparison of kids thing... it can be kids of any age and it's free ::) or if you really want to go for a group thing and bub is really active you could try a baby gym group.

Re: alternatives to playgroups

Depending on where you are there may be an organisation that manges playgroups, for example, our playgroup is a member of playgroups victoria, I think it also has something to do with the baptist playgroup organisation.  It is not relegious as such, they have it at the church building, and they share some of the equipment with the sunday childrens program, but they are separate, although they do celebrate Christmas and Easter etc.

Playgroup is a really cheap option, ours is about $30 a term.  Other things are a lot dearer.  We also do swimming, which is about $120 a term and we were doing ed gym (gymnastics for 3+) which was $7 per week paid for a term in advance.

I really liked playgroup, but try a few.  Ours had a lot of structure, but others didn't.  I liked the structure, and the kids are young and seemed to respond to it.  There were transitions from "free play" to reading a story, then washing hands for morning tea, and then music finished off the session.  Similar structure to kinder but not nearly as strict as the kids are too young.  They had heaps of different areas of toys, for example they may have a playdough table, a house corner, craft corner, baby corner, book corner, train corner, puzzle table and so on.  Mums are free to get a cuppa and have a chat, but are responsible for their own children.  To give you an idea, there was 1 1/4 hours play, followed by a story, (while mums pack up toys) morning tea, music and home.

Hope this helps, but know that different playgroups run differently, and ask other mums for their suggestions.

Jodi

Re: alternatives to playgroups

I used to participate in a playgroup in my area. It was a group of moms who arrange to meet at an agreed place and we just mingled while letting our kids play.

At this age, I had my son in a toddler gym. He loved it! He got to socialize with kids around his age but yet he didn't have to really play with them - this age is a tough one when it comes to playing with other kids! I never had him in a music group because we sang in the toddler gym anyway, plus he was the run around around crazy kind of kid.

Re: alternatives to playgroups

its a tricky age i think as yes he wants to play and interact yet  forgets hes smaller then the bigger kids..even if theres only 4-8 months difference it can be a huge gap in equality of play ....will look into the kinda gym thanks

Re: alternatives to playgroups

there are heaps you can do. it is just a case of looking. there is kinda gym u can go to and dance and drama.

play group is a un structured thing for mum and child. but apparently they are great to go to. the one i was going to go to was $3 a session which is to cover cuppa's and material for the kids and rent on the building
