Re: how old is too old to breastfeed??
As KSeers says, the WHO recommends 2 years because of the health benefits to mum & baby. I understand worldwide that the average is 4 years. But I have to admit Im in complete agreement with DA here!
I fed DD1 to 26 months (I decided 2 years and then life was too complicated with DH working away lots until 26 months) and Im aiming at 24ish months with DD2.
It never ceases to amaze me how many doctors can be so ill informed about breastfeeding!
Anyway, everyone has their own feeling for what is right for them and their children, and of course babies often decide to self wean before mum is ready!
As for me, I enjoy feeding a 1 year old partly because of the interaction, which you barely get from a baby. We have a laugh and a joke now, and she blows the odd raspberry on my tummy if she can get away with it! Also, it sets my mind at rest regarding her eating, as if she's not eaten much that day or been poorly, I know she wont starve or dehydrate if she's still having my milk. And as her big sister's eczema flared up the first time when I started giving her large amounts of dairy products, I know I can give her all the benefits of milk without that problem.
IMO, if you are both still enjoying b/f then carry on for the few more months you were planning on!

Re: how old is too old to breastfeed??
My first son I battled from day one, until about 10 months. ONLY because I had struggles. The second son took to the breast like a duck to water and didn't get off it until he was over two, I know that he would still go to the breast in the May of last year and he had turned two in the Feb, so 2 and three months. I don't care who you do it for, it is up to you. Elijah didn't do it for nutricion, he did it for comfort, but I didn't care.
I would let the doctor know straight that I didn't appreciate the comments, there is nothing wrong with what you are doing, as long as you are happy doing it.
If you really want to know you aren't the only one, you should look at the nursing mothers association, some people feed there newborns and are still feeding their toddlers and older.
Good for you.
