Peanuts during pregnancy

Hi all.

I have been told by my midwife that I shouldn't eat peanuts while I am pregnant but I have also read that it is OK if you and your partner aren't allergic to them, you see I have this craving for peanut butter and would like to know if anyone else ate peanuts during their pregnancy.

Thank you

Clare x

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

Hey,

I never heard of staying away from nuts during pregnancy. Yes, alot of people have allergies to nuts but there are allergies with everything. Its like not drinking milk cos bubs mite be allergic to dairy.

At the start of my pregnancy i craved peanut butter bad!! I ate it everyday, also ive eaten salted cashews the whole time ive been pregnant, thats 34weeks now. I eat anything, if my body feels like it, then i eat it. I have eaten ham aswell, i dont eat pre made salads tho and try to stay away from certain takeout shops, cos i dont know how long the foods been sitting there for.

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

I was told this by my midwife when I was pregnant with my daughter (I'm in Aust) so I stayed away from them but I didnt really have any craving for them either so that would have helped, but I forgot all about it this time and have been eating peanut butter on occassion this pregnancy!
My SIL ate them all through her pregnancy though, massive cravings, and Grace is 3 and no allergies.

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

I ate it all the time. But then I didn't avoid any foods in pregnancy unless my body said no. But then there wasn't a lot of the "do not eats" while I was pregnant either. Or if there was I was blissfully unaware. Anyway all three of mine love peanut butter.

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

I ate a lot of peanut butter when I was pregnant.. of course that was in the 'olden days' of the 70s whn I was vegeterian & nobody approved of that either... I daresay the midwife has her reasons.. & I also have no doubt that if the cravings get strong enuff you won't be able to stop yourself.

So; my understanding of why peanuts & peanut butter are dangerous to pregnant women is not b/c of allergy, but b/c of the mould that commonly grows inside peanut shells being potentially life-threatening. Hence the health scare on a number of brands of peanut butter a few years ago.

If you were to get your own (in the shell) peanuts (& check inside the shells as you shell them that they have no dark discolouration). you could then pop them into a blender with a little (perhaps safflower or light olive) oil & grind them into a paste yourself. Its a noisy process & you'll need to remove the brown husks yourself as well. Or you could get some hazelnut or cashew paste. Hazelnut will probably be closer to the right flavour but will be harder to find. Or again, you can blend them into a paste yourself. Don't use much oil as it isn't as nice when its too oily.

I believe in following cravings if at all possible; I believe that its our body's way of letting us know what nutrients we need.. I ate all kinds of strange things.. 4 kilos of apricots a day for 3 weeks; 3 days eating nothing but carob... a whole kilo of malt extract the day before I went into labour & a whole fresh coconut on my way into the hospital. (amongst other wonders). Mostly things high in iron, calcium or vitamin B. But brussel sprouts were out of season for most of my pregnancy & that was my 1st & longest-lived craving; so I had to make do with spinach w/ melted vegemite (what I really wanted was lightly-sauteed brussel sprouts w/ tamari butter).

Happy crave-eating!

Rosalinda

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

Hi,

As everybody else has said, i too enjoyed peanut butter while pregnant. I ate it with a spoon sometimes just because i couldn't get enough. Both my kids came out just fine, in saying that my son developed an allergy to peanut butter when he was about 2. It isn't life threating but he can't have it.

If your body wants it. I wouldn't be saying no.

Hope this helps

Juzzy

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

Good Morning Brightonbelle,

Ihope this post finds you well.

I agree with everyone else if you and your husband are not allergic to peanuts why not.

I also  know that the reason why you crave certain foods in pregnancy is that your body needs something out of that food nutirent wise.

The only craving I had with Ebony was Mum's home made curried sausages and we both knew that was a craving as I totally detest curried sausages. But obviously something in them is what my body needed so I listened. Mind you I only had to have it once and thats it. To this day I have never had them again. lol

Here is a little story about cravings while being pregnant.

When my mum had my sister many years ago, after she was born she constantly was poking her tongue out, Nan asked mum which cravings she had while she was pregnant with her. My mum said watermelon but I couldnt get any. So Nan got a piece of water melon and rubbed it on my sister tongue for a taste and then she stopped poking her tongue out. Call it an old wives tale or what ever but it worked.

All I can say is Just listen to your body and your cravings because they happen for a reason, your body needs something from that food.

Have a wonderful day and I hope you enjoy your peanut butter

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

I didn't eat nuts during my pregnancy as my hubby is allergic and my daughter still is allergic, so Im avoiding them in this pregnancy too. I think if neither you or your partner or other children have the allergy you should be ok. After all its a great source of energy and nutrition. I think the UK guidelines have changed recently, and its now meant to be ok if you have no family history. Avoid them also if you, partner or other children have asthma or ezcema. Em xx

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

OMGosh I craved peanut better like a fiend when I was pregnant...LOL Anything with peanut butter in it. It started out with peanuts then moved to peanut butter. I LOVED it!!!!!

I woudl think as long as you are not allergic everything should be fine. I always discussed things with my OB/GYN too to see what he thought aobut my qestions as well.

If you don't want to wait unitl an appt. you can always call and talk to the nurse and see what she has to say on the topic as well.

BTW towards the end of my preg. it moved form peanut butter to spicy mexican food, YUMMY...LOL

I''m going to put the advice article Les wrote about the latest research in the related content section so you can have a look at that.  Remember, it is based on recent findings and doesn't take into consideration genetic or environmental factors.

Re: Peanuts during pregnancy

Oh, and I did eat peanut butter during all my pregnancies, and none of my children are allergic to peanuts or any other foods.  I believe that those children who do develop food allergies are going to get them regardless of what you do and don't eat in pregnancy, so if you want that peanut butter, go for it!  Your craving it means your body wants the nutritional benefits it can provide, and who's game enough to argue with the pregnant body?  Not me.
