Antibiotics

Yesterday I took both my boys to the doctor as they have terrible colds & coughs & some of you know that Jack is prone to tonsilitis & Oscar has started to get ear infections so I thought it best to get them checked as it's a long weekend. Anyway, Oscar is fine - just viral & will be ok in a few days (although he doesn't sound it), but Jack has pneumonia! I nearly had a heart attack - the doctor didn't put him in hospital but sent him home with 2 different antibiotics to take. One is one he hasn't had before, it's Rulide D tablets that you put in a little water and this morning after his second dose he has just had uncontrollable diarrhoea. The CMI my old boss at the chemist gave me said I need to contact the Pharmacist or doctor if this happens....should I take him back into the doctor or should I wait and see if it happens again? I am really scared as we haven't used this antibiotic before & being told your almost 3 year old has pneumonia is pretty scarey.

Re: Antibiotics

Thanks, everything is fine now. I rang the pharmacist & got some more information & it hasn't happened again since. We are going to see another doctor tomorrow though if we can get in.

Re: Antibiotics

If the info card you got from the chemist said you should go back if specific symptoms arose, then that is exactly what you need to do.

It could be something as simple as the gut bacteria being wiped out completely by the antibiotics (the good and the bad- unfortunate side effect of antibiotics) or could be an indication of a more serious issue, either for your child or with the antibiotics.

Any time a member of your family starts a new medication, you should speak to your pharmacist about other medications that member is on, the side effects of the medication and any allergies.  Here in Australia, most medications now have an information sheet about all this that you can take with you.  Read this info and keep it in a place where you can check back to it if you need to.  Any time the person on the medication experiences side effects mentioned on the info sheet that state need to be checked on or has a side effect not mentioned in the info sheet, contact both your gp and the pharmacist where you bought the medication from.

By providing this information, you are helping to improve the services and products the pharmacies provide and could potentially stop a major issue with the medication that wasn't detected before.

Always, if in doubt, check it out.

Re: Antibiotics

Thanks Arna, I rang the pharmacist (my old boss) and she said if it happened again to go to the doctor again, luckily it didn't & he is fine. I think it was just the influx of both antibiotics at once into his system. I am giving him acidophilus powder daily to put the good bacteria back into his gut...thank god for my experience in pharmacy as I knew what to ask for & where to get information!

Re: Antibiotics

Hey teshia, it is very scary when they have phemonia.  My girl is almost 3 and she has had it about 4-6 times already!  I would not be to worried about him not going in the hospital as most of the time it's in the early stages when it's caught.  Though I know your boys get it hard, so it's good that he is on 2 meds this time around.  In my experience it's pretty normal for diareah to occur, especially when the meds are strong.  It's cause they are killing the good bacteria in the bowel, and thus throws off the balance of things.  I would wait to see if it's ongoing for a day or so, or if he is complaining of severe cramping.  Make sure that you are giving lots of fluids with this and lots of starchy things as well.  If it eases your mind, call the doc and let them know, but I don't see it something as needing to take him there.  If you need and ear, certainly mintimail me, as like I've said, my girl has been thru this many times!  Hang in there, and another thing that is really good to help with the pnemonia and getting all the mucus up is guaefen(spelling) it's an expectorant and it really helps to get out the extra mucus that is deep in the lungs.  Hang in there sweetie!

Re: Antibiotics

Hey hunni! Thanks for the reassurance, it really mean a lot. It's nice to hear from someone that has dealt with it with a child so young. If I need any advice I will mail you - actually I might mail you anyway...Thanks so much! xxoo

Re: Antibiotics

My eldest recently had pnuemonia. She only ended up in hospital cause she collapsed while playing Singstar karaoke. She exerted her lungs, cutting off her oxygen, & couldn't breathe. She was only in hospital a couple of days (she's 13). She actually had a combination of viral & bacterial pneumonia, making it harder to treat. She's fine now.

I really thought a 3 year old would be admitted to hospital. Make sure he doesn't run around, doing anything that will exert his lungs. If the chemist said to tell the doctor or chemist if he got diarrhoea then take him back to the doctor, or maybe call the chemist for advice first.

Don't be too worried about him having pneumonia. It's scary, yes, but he will be fine. Keep him out of the cold as much as possible, plenty of rest, plenty of water.

Re: Antibiotics

Thanks for the reassurance. I too thought that being so young he would be admitted - but the doctor didn't seem to know a lot (he is foreign, I am in no way racist but he actually had to research the drugs in front of me), I have spoken to the pharmacist & she said if it happens again take him into the doctor. I will make sure he rests & drinks plenty - he won't eat though!
