Re: start solids

The world health organization recommends to start feeding solids at 6mth click here To find out more.

Personally I think 3 mths is too old your baby must be able to sit unaided eg no propping up with pillows.  Must also have good head support and to have lost the tongue relex that will push all the food of.

When you do commence feeding it is a slow gradual process, start off with some baby rice cereal.  Make it runny then increas the amount and texture.  After that try one food at a time pureed apple or pears are good.  Try this for 3-4 day to rule out allergies.  Don't try new food b4 bed as you you will be unsure if she has allergies and you don't wont to be dealing with it during the night.

Good luck with it all and your baby will tell you when she is ready for solids.

Re: start solids

my dr told me not to give solids until 6 months...and then you start with cereal.  Oatmeal is much easier for them to digest than rice cereal is.

Re: start solids

Start with the powder creals, rice or oatmeal.  Make it watery at first and then gradually thicken it up over a few days/week.  After she has mastered that you can move onto the veggies like squash, green beans, carrrots and then the fruits.  Make sure you give them at least 3-5 days in a row to make sure no allergies occur.  Good luck and remember, just take it slow.  At this age, all their nutrition comes from the milk, not solids.  So be sure you don't give more then a teaspoon or two until she is at least 5-6m.  You don't want to fill her up on the solids and keep her from getting what she needs from the milk.  Enjoy it and have fun....

Re: start solids

wait till she is 4 months old before starting, but now u can get the food ready. i would buy some ice containers and those plastic bags with zip locks. u can buy the small ones which will hold 1 meal.

it is recomended that u start with things like rice ceareal but i didnt. i started with apple.

my advice is to go to the supermarket and see what they have for 4 month olds and make that. u can either use a stab bender or buy a ricer from the house and kitchen shops (thay arent that much to buy) make a batch up of stuff ie like pumpkin and put in the frezzer and then transfer to either the zip lock bags or containers and lable with item and date made.

good luck

Re: start solids

3 mths is way too early to be thinking of introducing solids.

Did you know that from birth to somewhere between 4-6mths a babies gut is known as an 'open or virgin' gut. This means that anything you feed bub has the potential to pass through the gut into the bloodstream. This in many cases can cause allergies, intolerances, asthma or exzema. Every baby is different so some babies guts may close after 4mths and some may be closer to 6mths. This is one of the reasons why the current recommendations are to wait to 6mths. Any earlier then 4mths should be done only under the strict supervision of your medical adviser (there are some medical conditions that call for the early introduction of solids)

Here's some signs your bub is ready for solids.- They lose their tongue poke reflex, they can sit fairly unaided (propping up in a bouncer is not sitting unaided) and they are hungry despite milk feeds being increased for a week or more (it's better to increase the milk feeds then to introduce solids).

Once bub is old enough you can start with rice cereal (although I know a lot of mum that this has caused severe constipation in bubs) and then move onto fruits and veggies. All these can be steamed/mashed and mixed with BM, formula or cooled boiled water.

Hope this helps

Re: start solids

I absolutely agree you should wait until 6 months, 3 months is way way too early. Your baby will be 6 months old in no time and you will soon have all the fun and mess of feeding him/her.  I have heard of a book call 'Top 100 Baby Purees' not sure of the author sorry and i have not seen the book myself, but i intend on having a look when it's time for my bub to start solids...maybe this book will be able to give you some good ideas and recipes.  Best of luck with it.
