Natural remedies

Hi all

Have any of you any advice about taking arnica just before going into labour as a healing aid. Midwives actually recommend it apparantly. I don't know the correct dose. Who is the appropriate proffesional to seek, is it a herbalist, naturapath, homeopath i'd really like to follow this route but with the right advice. Also is there something which is good for perhaps putting in the bath post birth for the aim of healing again. I tore last time and really want to do all i can this time.

Many many thanks

Re: Natural remedies

Arnica in a cream works quiet well it labour, also clary sage oil is the same as it helps to relax the muscles i found clary sage a magical treat and my mum used arnica and said the same. i just added a few drops of clairy sage to baby oil and rubbed it in and you can buy arnica rub in a tub.

Good luck sweety

Re: Natural remedies

Hi there

Thanks for that. I think i'll go to a homeopath as you can get differing advice and i'd rather be safe with this sort of thing, a cream could be less invasive and work well too. I've also heard about Clary sage so i'll definatly ask. It can just be a bit confusing as to where to get the right advice, but you've been really helpful.

Thanks a lot !

Re: Natural remedies

I was given some stuff to put in my bath after birth by my midwives, It made the water green but I can't remember what it is called so I'm sorry to be of so little help.  I don't know if you have any midwives in your area that you can contact.  I can't see them not giving you the info even if you are not a patient.

Re: Natural remedies

Arnica is not recommended for use during pregnancy or when breastfeeding.  There are some chemicals in it (natural of course) that can cause problems with the blood.  Any midwife who recommends it should be struck off.  I had a massive bruise with my 4th pregnancy that kept rebruising and asked my pharmacist if I could try it, and he said 'oh no, you could really cause problems during labour with excessive bleeding'  A better natural healing aid is papaya or paw paw.  Massage it onto the affected area and it helps to break bruising up.

Espom salts for the bath will help with vaginal tearing.  The other thing I used to prevent further damage when going to the toilet was lanonlin.  I'd apply it to the tear before and after weeing and it protected the tear from the urine sting and also kept the area nice and moisturised so that it didn't scab up, but healed much more smoothly.  It is also great for nipple complaints too.

Re: Natural remedies

Thanks for your reply.

I'll definatly look into lanolin and paw paw. It's amazing the things you get told are safe, but must admitt i'm pretty cautious when a) pregnant and b) b feeding when you know everything 's passed onto your little one.

Thanks again !
