Quick Question - Honey

My son will be 1 year old in just over a week.   When can I start giving him honey?

I have been researching on the net found some info that said at the age of 1 and others at the age of 2.  What is the correct age to give honey?

Re: Quick Question - Honey

I didn't know this so thanks for bringing this to my attention as I need to be more vigilant with other people's kids since I mind them. I asked the lady who's 9 month old baby I mind if she knew this and actually she didn't as a matter of fact she is from India and in there country they wash there babies face every day starting with rubbing a gel on there eyes then they paint there tongue with honey in the sign of there god. They have many different cultural things there. Good to know though!

Re: Quick Question - Honey

my personal opinion is to wait until your son has all his teeth - so probably by about 2 or so - maybe a bit older.

This is because honey can and does (i have experienced this) cause the teeth to start decaying or getting cavities before they come through - no matter how often you brush your childs teeth. I brush my daughters teeth 2 times daily and i have seen one of her teeth has a small cavity in it.

Re: Quick Question - Honey

2 if it's shop bought and 5 if it's from the markets. My mum and dad used to run an apiary and always told us never give honey under 2. Adults can get sick from botulism and if you wait til over 2 bub will handle it better if it does happen. And 5 for market honey because it doesn't go through the heat processing that store honey does.

I heard that you should wait until the child is 1 year old, and even after that don't give too much, because of botulism.

Re: Quick Question - Honey

I would wait until he a little over a year.  the concern with honey, as I'm sure you've read is the increased chance of getting botulism, which is not a good thing.  So I would give it to him in cooked food, but not on toast or anything until he is a few months older.
