Re: ADHD and food

My son has ADHD and other conditions. You can one child chocolate and he will be fine and another will not. There are lots of people that say one thing and then another says different-there are no hard and fast rules to this. You could be told not to give your child something  and then on find out that your child would have been fine on it anyway.

It is trial an error at the end of the day too. Have you considered a food diary and also get your doctor or your son's specialist to refer your child to a Dietician? You give your child the same diet and introduce a food for a few days and write down how he behaved but it has to be done under strict conditions because your child could just be having an off day and you need to figure if it was the food or not that's why I suggest a dietician.

Some foods can also help increase brain activity and again there are wide discussions. Use your own intuitive and don't rule out things before you have given your child a chance to try them or they may end up having a hard time when going to things like parties etc.

Take each day as a trial and see how they affect him. My son couldn't have blue or orange smarties due to the colouring but then another adhd child could-see where I'm coming from.

Hugs and hope

Re: ADHD and food

Hi there, just reading a book I bought from the health food store

"FEd Up" - Understanding how food affects your child and what you can do about it, Sue Dengate.  Random House 1998 & and updated 2008.

She also has a specific  book called  "Fed Up with ADHD".

I can only speak on "Fed up" as my child has multiple food allergies/ intollerances and I'm trying to understand why these new phenomenums are becoming so prevelient now, she suggests that ADHD is also one the rise.  When we grew up I knew one child with egg allergy. In short Sue Denegate suggests modern food is the problem.

A great and interesting read, see how you go. I'd also like to know what you think.

Suzy.

Re: ADHD and food

White bread is a big one. i go very hypo on white bread. anything with preservitive 202, 282 and a few others.. Apples are another and jucie. try and find naturally fresh squeezed juice. processed meat. oh the list goes on and on. it all depends on what degree you want to go. how bad is the child in Q too.

anything that is not natural is out. this includes a lot of cereals and kidie bars.

my son and hubby have ADD and my daughter and i have ADHD (great family fun) we eat lots of fresh fruit and veg and meat from the butcher as it is less refind, find a good butcher as some refine things. things like sausages from coles or what ever have so many preservities in them it isnt funny. My butcher uses no preservities and the sausages are fresh daily. you can watch him make them and they are real meat not the fine mince stuff.

minti mail me if you wanna chat more on this.
