Re: controlled crying

From a personal point of view I think 45 minutes is too long to leave a 12 month old. I went through controlled crying with my son and used to leave him for 5 minutes the first time gradually increasing the time you leave him upto 30 mins.  When you go back in to lay him down try saying 'its time to sleep' in a quiet voice but dont say anything else and dont make eye contact with him at all. It will take time, it is hard work and can be very upsetting but it is definately worth it. Within 2 weeks my son was going to sleep in his cot on his own and sleeping all night!

Re: controlled crying

Hi there,

I really feel your pain!  It is such a hard think to do, we had to do it when our boy was about 6 month old because he was only sleeping for an hour at a time - all day and night.  I had to get my husband to do it and it was really hard but was all over with in just a few nights.  I wrote an article as it was happening that might help?

Good luck and hang in there!

Re: controlled crying

We did this with my son too. I said I would never let my baby cry to sleep but after 4 months of driving him around the block in the car etc. (lol) I let him cry to sleep. It only took 3 or 4 days and each time the crying would be shorter until finally he'd go right to sleep when I laid him down. He's 4 years old now and is the best sleeper!

Sounds to me like you're on the right track if he went 45 minutes then 30. He'll probably cry less tonight and so on, and you'll be glad you didn't give up! :)

Re: controlled crying

At 12 months 45 mins is far too long. When my dauaghter was 12 months i would go in every 10 mins and lie her back down with her bottle or a toy or teether anything that would get her to sleep , if none of these work nursery rhymmes on the cd player usually relaxes my daughters mind and helps her to get to sleep maybe you should give it a go . Just dont give up it will be worth it in the end . Dont worry your doing great just hang in there .

Luv Emz xx

Re: controlled crying

I feel 45 minutes is too long. He's still a baby. Go in after 15minutes and resettle. It's hard but he will get the hang of it if you don't give in. Well worth it for a good nights sleep for everyone.
