when i gave birth to my eldest son in 05, my midwife had to break my waters because my mucus plug had come away- but the waters were still intact 1hr later!! lol this happened with my second son- mucus came away but waters were still intact!!
every woman is different, but the mucus plug pretty much looks like everyone elses
The plug does have to make way for the waters to be able to leak out, but you may not notice that this has happened. If you do see the "plug", it is usually in the form of a bloody mucus patch or blob. Nothing like a real plug. Good luck with it all.
It is possible for your waters to start breaking upto a week before you actually go into labour. This will be a slow leak that you may not even notice (mine happened when I went to the toilet for about 3 days, so no mess). Some women have the big break of waters and others have to have their waters broken closer to full dilation.
The mucus plug is blood stained, snot coloured and like a hard jelly. It is possible for you to lose the plug or have a 'show' upto a month before bubs is born. Some women don't lose the plug until they are actually pushing bubs out. With mine, the only 2 I have seen the plug with were the last 2, and one happened about an hour before I gave birth and the other about a week before she was born. It is different for everyone and every pregnancy.
It certainly is. I never saw my plug with my first 2, only my 3rd. Waters can break at the start of labour, with plenty of time to go until the baby arrives, or they can break when right into labour, with not much time left!
As for what the mucus plug looks like, trust me, you'll know! As it's name suggests, it's a mucus-like discharge, often bloody.
