Cow's milk protein allergy?

I am in the process of introducing cow's milk to my twins (1 yr old). I started about a week ago by giving them 4 oz once a day. Other than this, they are breastfed 3x a day (no formula).

The first time they had cow's milk, their faces (around the mouth) turned red and developed hives. They started sneezing, and their noses started running. They had colds at the time, so I thought that may have been the cause. On their 12 month old check, I mentioned it to the pediatrician and he said to keep an eye on it because it's not a common reaction to cow's milk. He said if a child has cow's milk allergy, it usually manifests itself with gastrointestinal problems.

So I skipped a few days and didn't give cow's milk. But then, I tried again and the same thing happens. When the spit up milk, the skin around their necks that the cow's milk touched turns red too.

Now, all this is instantaneous. The red spots/hives appear within minutes of finishing their milk.

Has anyone had this happen to? What did you do? I'd like to hear your experiences.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

You must stop cows milk as the reactions may continue to get worse.

I am quite passionate about this but you MUST try goats milk.  The protein structure in cows milk and soy are almost identical, the protein structure in goats milk is similar to human breast milk.

My son can't tolerate much cows milk and vomits if given too much milk.  I have tried everything.  He can tolerate rice milk, but this is a carbohydrate, not a protein, and so I decided on goats milk instead.

If you persist with cows milk the reactions are likely to get worse, and they may take longer to grow out of.

I would try a few drops of goats milk against their skin before you offer it to drink too,

Good luck and I would be interested in knowing how you go.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

I'd have to disagree with this coment, soy and cows milk protien are very different, cows and goats and breast milk are very closeley linked, my daughter has multiple food allergies to dairy, eggs, all nuts and rye as well as been allergic to dogs and horses.  I don't know of anyone with a cows milk allergie that can tollerate gaots milk, and if they do they usually have an intolerance to cows milk and not an allergy.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

I must say that I haven't done the reading on it.  It is just that I have an ongoing relationship (professional relationship)  with my chiropractor, also including her treating of my son, and she had done a course on pediatrics, and that is what she told me from that.  She said something along the lines of, if the child is allergic to the protein in cows milk, switch them straight to goats milk, not soy milk, as soy milk has a similar protein structure.

This is not the same as a lactose intolerance, in which case goats milk should also be avoided and soy may be an option.  My son responded worse to soy milk than to cows milk.

Goats milk is available at my local Safeway/Woolworths and Coles, in the fresh milk section/fridge.  It is expensive, but nicer than the alternative in my opinion.

Sorry for any confusion.

Jodi

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

I will stop the cow's milk. But the weird thing is, I put a drop of cow's milk on their arm and their arm didn't turn red at all - no rash or anything!

I will look into goat's milk, though I wouldn't know the first thing on where to find it.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

I have to say that the skin test is very unreliable.  One the allergy reaction is when in enters into the blood, hench they have to prick the skin (actually inject the allergin) for the skin tests.  The reason why they don't react is our skin is designed to keep such intruders out.  Hench the reaction when they ingest it.  Also my girls specialist told me to never try the skin method as it can trigger a potenially life treatening reaction and most often needs immediate medical attention, which is not often able to occur in the home.  Hang in there Izzy.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

Hi Izzy, this is exactly what happened to my daughter with eggs.  It is definantely and allergy, so be very careful will items containing milk.  I would have them tested to see if it is a true allergy and to what extent.  The blood test is the best for this.  My daughter had to avoid all egg containing items, all the way down to breads and cakes.  So for now take away all items that have milk or milk products as this can cause the allergy to become even more severe.  Another thing to think about is their prematurity, since they are premies, their body may need a bit more time to mature, but to me it seems more like an allergic reaction.

When did you have your daughter tested?

and what do you do now? it seems a lot of product contains eggs.

This morning I decided to start a food diary and was planning on doing that for a week or two and bring it to the pediatrician. Well, wouldn't you know it, 10 minutes after I fed the girls yogurt, the red spots came.

Wow, it'll get worse? I will stop then.

I may continue to do a food diary for a week and then take them to the pediatrician.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

It can IF the levels in their blood get high enough...I would stop. The rash may end up all over their body....

I go to a reflux board at www.parent-2-parent.com

They ahave an allergy board where you could talk to other parents who are more educated about this than me...But I would stop.

I don't think they will have like an anaphalatic reaction, but the rash coudl get worse.

Were they on regular formula?????

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

I am still breastfeeding, so they are not on formula at all. They were on some formula for the first 2 months of their life, and never had a reaction then. But I guess that doesn't mean anything since it could have developed later.

Thank you very much.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

The other thing to remember is the doctor is right, it isn't a common reaction to a milk allergy. The reaction you are saying with hives immediately can be an indicator of a strong reaction. So you really should get it looked into further without introducing anymore milk as a more severe reaction might happen.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

thank you for your input!

Some how I have it in my head that I should be pushing milk to get the system get used to it. Bad thinking! So I'm so glad about this discussions here! It is better to be cautious.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

Not all kids who tolerated normal BM or normal formula can tolerate cow's milk.

My sister's DD did fine at the breast and did fine on formula later (about 6 months) but she can't tolerate milk at all....not one bit. It gives her  GI issues. Meaning she get explosive explosive dirreah...yucky!!!!

So jsut becaus ethey have don efine up until now doesn't mean the ywill continue to do fine at the transition. I only asked because that *can* be a triggar.

I wouldn't go full out of somethign WAY differnt yet. My niece tolerates Soy milk just fine. Taht woudl be my next step. It's the next cheapest...LOL so I would work my way through that first. Before going to anything that would be more costly.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

Hi Izzy - that sounds very similar to the reaction my niece had to egg.  She then had the reaction confirmed by a paediatrician who did a skin prick test (which also turned up some other allergies).  Again, I've not heard of this reaction to milk before (my husband is allergic to milk, but he gets the runs from all dairy products - even ice cream), but if you have noticed this so obviously so quickly, I would follow it up with the dr.  My niece still comes up like this - even if someone who has had egg kisses or touches her, so it is a great concern and needs constant vigilance.

Re: Cow's milk protein allergy?

I think they are reating to the cow's milk. Not all kiddos will react GI wise to milk but will get hives and red spots on and around their face. I would stop giving it to them.

You can try either #1 to stop the cow's milk all together and try again in a few months or...#2 go to soy milk and see how they do.

Some kids react to both cow's and soy milk, if that happen then you can buy rice milk at a  health foods store. Not many kids react to that.
