Re: What is controlled crying

The links have already been given for you.

For any parent, controlled crying can  be hard.  I know my mum had to be forcibly held down by my dad when my younger sister was born.  With mine, I've just told myself, let her cry so you can go to the toilet and have something to eat!

It is hard, but as long as you monitor the cry, and pick up before the real panic sets in, it works.   You are actually teaching your baby to be independent, and if you start from birth, you are less likely to have a clingy baby later on.  Patience is something we learn, not born with, and by making your baby wait while you finish what you are doing (provided you don't leave it more than 5-10mins), then they will learn patience quicker.

Basically you make sure your child is ok ie not hurgry, hot/cold, wet or dirty, not teething etc.. You put your baby in the cot for sleep say good night then leave.  If he crys then you leave him for say 2 min then go in and with out saying anything make sure he is ok.  Walk out then leave him for longer to cry. Say 5min.  If after 5min the baby is not really crying don't go in if he is go in and don't talk or make eye contact just resettle.  This goes on and on and the time you leave your baby crying increases until your baby stops crying and goes to sleep.

It may take up to a week or more b4 your baby gets the hang of it to settle himself and go straight to sleep.

Hope this makes sense.
