Boy's "accidents"

My son turns 5 next week and starts school next year.  He has been toilet trained for 2 years.

Suddenly he has started having "accidents", where he wees on the floor - either in the toilet or just outside the door.  As far as I am aware he does not do it anywhere else.

At first I ignored it and praised it up when he did the right thing.  But now I am cleaning the toilet multiple times a day - he even did it at his sister's birthday party when we had people over.  Not only am I sick of it but we have his birthday party next weekend and I dread it happening then.

I have tried prompting him to go when he seems to and asking if he needs to go regularly, I have walked him through using the big toilet (again), I have talked to him about it and tried to find out why (to no avail) and have even asked him to drop his pants outside the toilet so I am not having to wash multiple pairs a day.

I am at my wits end.  Could it be something physical?  Should I take him to the dr?  HELP!

Re: Boy's

Could it be he is worried about starting school?  Has he been in daycare which gets them ready for school?  It sounds like he is worried or upset about something and wetting himself out of comfort.

When a child feels as though they are not in control of a situation, they look for something they can control, and their bowels and bladders are one thing they can control.

Re: Boy's

Well, he was for a while worried when everyone kept saying "oh you are turning 5 that means school!"  (You know with that look! - that's enough to scare anyone!)  We talked through it and I thought he was ok with it.  He goes to preschool 3 days a week and loves it and has friends who will be at school with him next year.  He also has bad dreams but has had for years and we have never got to the bottom of them.  Maybe it is anxiety, I don't know...

The only reason he can give me is "i don't know it is just an accident", but I keep trying to say that an accident is something that doesn't happen every day.  I don't know....  I'll try booking him into the dr and see what he says.

Re: Boy's

I totally agree with "yummy mummy"! One of my boys gets distracted very easily and rarely now but still sometimes doesn't get there in time and he is 7yo.  This never happens at school, just at home where there is more fun things going on so i haven't been to worried about any medical problems and after the 1st couple of times i took him to the doctors just in case.  Its usually when he has been playing on the computer or Wii (so aptly named! lol) or watching tv.  If you are worried get him checked at the doctors as a precaution. Reminders work wonders!  I try and do it as discretely as possible when i know he is busy and might not think to go himself.  I do it without his brothers knowing and if he does have an "accidient" we keep it between us. The last thing they need is siblings teasing them.

Re: Boy's

Thanks - maybe it is a boy thing?  I do keep reminding him, but most of the time he says he doesn't need to go and when I do get him there, he'll go before he gets to the toilet....

Re: Boy's

I agree with below that he might have a UTI.  Does is smell fishey or off, or is it cloudy?  If so he may have a UTI which will make them not want to go, have bad accidents and just be totally different.  My girl started to do that too and my MIL said her pee smelled like fish, well sure enough (its in my blog) after a week of it seeming to be gone she spiked a fever and we ended up in the er.  Find out it she had a horrible UTI and once that was under control, in a matter of days she was accident free.  I hope this helps, I don't know what else to say.  But for my little girl it was the UTI that caused her to no make it is time, etc.  Good luck!

Re: Boy's

Thanks!  His actually smells a lot like ammonia - especially when it is dried (on his clothes).  EEW Gross!  Anyway, I've booked him in with the dr on Monday to make sure (first time I could get)...

Re: Boy's

I had this problem with my daughter and my eldest, my daughter was younger though, but my son would never seem to make it to the toilet, it was like he was so much more interested in doing what he was doing then go to the toilet.....  So by the time he needed to go he would either wee on the way or wee all over the floor.....  I started reminding him every 15 to 20 min to go to the toilet it took about 2 to 3 months before he finally stopped and went back to normal.....  Unless there is something medically wrong I put it down to pure laziness and not wanting to interrupt the play time etc.....  Now I am putting up with him weeing the bed because he is to lazy to get up at night grrrrr.....  Goodluck and I hope it is just a can't be bothered problem not a medical one x

Re: Boy's

hey Kseers,

This sounds like its not normal behaviour of ur little man. I once had my boy do this when he was little and found out he had an infection after taking him to the Dr. I would be taking him to get checked out so if there is no medical reason for him to be doing this u will be able to get ontop of the behaviour. Im sure ur pulling ur hair out over this as its so frustrating. Goodluck on this, let me know what u find out ok!!!

luv na xxxx
