Until recently the trend was to introduce cows milk, eggs and nut products later and later. It has been found that over the years there has been a huge increase in allergys.
The latest information to be realised is that because we do not introduce different foods early enough the chance of allergy increases.
With any new foods introduce gradually, however, unless there has been someone in the family with extreme allergys I would not worry.
I have heard after a year old, but different doctors also have different recommendations. My daughter has had a little peanut butter at this pint. She is 15 months and has done fine
It is STRONGLY recommended that you do not give you child peanuts before the age of 3 years but most GP's would prefer that this be lifted to 5 yrs . .
I myself have had ALL my children tested for a peanut allergy at around 2 and a half as this type of allergy can be lethal and I would rather not take the chance so I paid a small price to have my daughters checked medically. I think that this should be how every parent should approach things like peanut allergies . .
i ama mother of one and i am waiting till hes is 5yrs old to give him any peanut batters an i can not have it all the time ask your doctor what they think when u should try him on it good luck
I read somewhere that the world health organisation recommends that you don't give children any nutty product whether it be hazelnut spread or peanut butter until the age of 3 and above. Peanut allergies (well allergies in general) can be hereditary and so caution should always be taken when giving children such products. I discovered yesterday that emily found a picnic chocolate bar in my hand bag and decided to open it and eat it. She only took a bite but i panicked and took the rest off her, as i am allergic to them and because i am home alone with the two kids i didn't want to risk having to rush to the hospital. Luckily she was fine but never the less.
On the other hand, its up to you. My other halfs cousin gave her children peanut butter and nutella from a very young age and they are fine.
Just keep your eye on him (which i am sure you will) when he is having peanut butter.
Even though DS has no allergy issues we are waiting until he is at leat 2 before we try nuts with him. You can try sunbutter. Ihave heard that's prety good. Health food stores sell it.
I would err to the side of caution in regard to peanuts, (and nuts in general). Mostly because of potential allergies, but also because of the choking hazard they present at such an early age. (With the exception of smooth peanut butter of course). Touch wood that we have no allergies so far, however allergies can develop, see HarrisonsMommy's blog, and also Tammy13 has written some very detailed advice. Searching peanut allergy in the 'find stuff' bar, also turned up a good list of advice etc. (My internet is on the blink, otherwise I would have given you links - sorry matey).
