Umbilical Hernia

My son turns 5 this week and he has had an umbilical hernia since birth.  It just means his belly button pokes out and the dr assures me there is no risk of any further damage.  However I think it is growing - my husband thinks that is just because my son is growing.  If it is growing we need to talk to a surgeon about whether we should get it fixed and now is the time to do it as he starts school next year.

Has anyone had children with this and did you get it operated on?  What was the outcome?

Re: Umbilical Hernia

My mother in law told me that my husband was born with umbilical hernia and she was assured that it wouldn't do any damage and that it should fix itself. She said as a baby, she could see it pop out more as he cried. But as he grew older, it went away.

Yes my nephew is 2 and this is what he had when he was a baby he used to cry and cry and noone could settle him. He is fine now so I think it just fixed itself.

Re: Umbilical Hernia

My 4 year old has a sticky out belly button, but I don't think it was caused by a hernia, more the fact the midwives were in a real rush when she was born.

If you are concerned that it is getting bigger, then it is always better to have it checked out.
