Unsettled baby at night

My baby is 4 1/2 months old and she is a great sleeper during the day - she has settled into a routine of being up for 1 1/2 hrs and then sleeps 21/2 to 3hrs.  She never cries when I put her down during the day. She is being breastfeed and on solids. Our problem is at the last feed for the night at around 8.00pm it can take me up to 2 hours to get her down she cries/screams on and off.  I have tried giving her a top up bottle but she wont take it. During this unsettled time I have tried the patting settling technique which works during the day if I need to use it but for some reason not during this time.  I have even left her cry herself to sleep which I hate doing. When I get her down eventually, I will then be up and down to her 3 - 4 times between 11.00pm and her feed at 4.00am. I find it very frustrating and upsetting. She is our third child. Any ideas!

I would probably keep her up a little more during the day. I know she has a routine but try and get her into a new one of staying up for a few hours early afternoon and late night. say from 1-3 then up at 6-8.30.

I would say maybe she is getting a bit too much sleep during the day or that you have the house very quiet at night.  We have background noise most of the night for our girls, and when we don't, those are the nights we are up and down with them, or have them in our bed.

You could try having a radio on during the night, just loud enough for her to hear the music.

Re: Unsettled baby at night

fist of all 4 and a half months seems quite early to be starting solids. it's not really advised to start them on solids til 6 months and they have an "open" digestive system and some food can pass into the blood stream which can lead to allergies later.

she might be getting too much sleep during the day, so she's not wanting to go down later at night, sounds like she could be confusing day with night, can you shorten the naps a little?

Re: Unsettled baby at night

I have to say that though 4 1/2 months is early NOW it wasn't a year ago when they made baby food for a 4 month old. I have been feeding my son since 4 months and my nephew is 2 1/2 and he has been on solids since 3 1/2 months on the advice of his peadeatrician so I don't agree with the whole 6 month stuff.

Re: Unsettled baby at night

Thanks for that - my other children started solids when they were 3 1/2 months old and the first would sleep 8 hours straight and the second slept 12 hours from 8.00 to 8.00 at 12 weks of age.  I have checked with the infant welfare nurse and she advised put her on solids but even before I started solids I had trouble with settling her at night - Last night she took 1 hour to get down crying on and off but then slept to 7.00 this morning and then went straight back down to 9.00am - she is just so unpredicatable.
