The milk only dries up when you stop feeding completely. They will fill up, may be a little sore so try the good old cabbage leaves & hot showers or heat pads, but they will soon dry up & settle back to normal.

Re: drying up breast milk

Hi there

I weaned my boy off the boob when he was 8 1/2 months. What i did was wean him very slowly, so that my milk would settle down on its own.

What i did when it was getting painful, was express some milk by hand, but only enough to relieve the pressure. The more you pump, the more you produce.

Also try not to let hot water run down them while you are showering - this produces more. Also cabbage leaves are great. Especially if they are straight out of the fridge.

Hope this helps - good luck. Cass xox

Re: drying up breast milk

Hey,

I asked my mum the same thing today beacuse im not planning to breastfeed.

If your trying to stop the breastmilk all together you need to stop breastfeeding all together. The more you stimulate the nipple and express, the more milk that will produce.

It can take a few weeks for the milk to dry out completely and it can be painful. Just dont stimulate the nipple at all, this will cause more milk to produce.

Ok, drying up the milk isn't going to happen over night.  If you go to cutting out breastfeeds all together, you will find that you will suffer engoregment for a few days.  Hand expressing just to relieve the pressure will help with this.

Realistically, there are no quick ways to dry your milk up.

The quickest way is to place frozen cabbage leaves - sounds crazy but it works - over your breasts and firmly bind them to your chest, using broad cloth or bandage, and change the leaves every 4-6 hours. I just had to do mine as well, took 48 hours without the cabbage leaves, its much quicker with them. I couldn't be bothered going to buy a cabbage just for that purpose and ended up wishing I did!
