Re: how can I get my child to let me brush her teeth?

A little more info ie childs age would help but anyway I have used a lot of methods listed here by other parents too.

  • let the child brush your teeth whilst you do thiers, messy but fun for them and they realise it's ok
  • sing the wheels on the bus ie up and down for the front teeth, round and round for the back teeth, my son really loves this, but insists on the wheels on the train!
  • let your child chose the toothbrush and toothpaste when you are shopping...had to resort to this with this last set of molars as a method of bribing him to brush cos his gums are really sore
  • play music
  • sticker on behaviour chart for brushing teeth
  • if child is getting teeth and gums are sore, put alittle bonjela on the gums a few minutes before brushing and this will numb them a bit, so it won't be as much of a struggle

Re: how can I get my child to let me brush her teeth?

I know this is a little bit different but i have to supervise my 10 year old daughter brushing her teeth just to make sure she uses enough toothpaste and actually brushes them.  I've put an egg timer in the bathroom to make sure she does it for long enough and i have to watch her to make sure she doesn't rinse the toothpaste off her brush before she starts... Kids really don't like brushing their teeth!

Re: how can I get my child to let me brush her teeth?

Hi there

My little man is almost 11 months old, he has 10 teeth already, so bought him a 3 toothbrish started pack from big w. I gave him the first one to chew on (it is just rubber feeling spiky things - hard to explain) and when ever he put it in his mouth i would say brushy brushy brushy.

Now he has moved on to the second one which is still rubber but looks more like a toothbrush with bristles and when he is in the bath, we wash his face, brush his teeth and wash his body - i just combined it into normal routine. He doesnt know any different now.

I dont know how old your daughter is, but make it a game.

Re: how can I get my child to let me brush her teeth?

Jedd has HUGE HUGE oral sensory issues, just check out my pasge if you want to know abouthtem...LOL

I face him away from me as I sit ont he toilet seat. I wrap my leags around the lower half of his body and hold his head in the  crutch of my arm with my hand and palm on his forehead to hold him still.

I then sing to him as I brush his teeth. I only sing IF he is letting me brush them. As soon as he jerks out  of my grip, I stop singing. He likes the wopng "the wheels on the bus" so...he lets me do it.

After a bout 2 months of doin git that way he rarely fights me know. I still ahve to use the "hold" on him but he tolerates it much better. Prior to just he act of putting th ebrush in his mouth would cause him to vomit...

BTW this is a gentle hold that has been suggested to us by his doctors, I don't want anyone to think I am strangling my kids....LOL.

If you ask any dr or nurse the "proper" way to restrain your child for shots or procedures, this is one of those hold routinly used. In our Children's ER they hav ethe "holds" listed on t he wall with picutres to help illustrate so that they are done properly...

Re: how can I get my child to let me brush her teeth?

I let me my daughter brush her teeth first and then say mommy's going to inspect her teeth.  Or I'll tell her I'm going to brush them really quick and then let her do as long as she likes.  She's 3 and does a great job on her own.

Make it a game.  We play cleanest smile contest and have no worries, even with our 1 year old.

More info would help. Age? What type of toothbrush are you using? Toothpaste? I found that if I let my kids brush my teeth they let me brush theirs. That might be worth trying.
