sleeping without a cot

I have finally decided that it's time my 22 month old is ready for a junior bed. She is quite developed and appears to understand that she is now in a "big girl bed" of which she went into without a fuss tonight.  I did show her the bed early in the afternoon and we  did talk a  lot about how this is her new "big girl" bed. Anyone with any suggestions on  this transition I'd appreciate your experience.

Re: sleeping without a cot

I liked the cot and my first fell out of the bed the first couple of times so he liked it too (the cot), he was in it until he was 3 1/2.  My youngest made the transition just before his third birthday, as soon as they started climbing out of the cot I would leave the cot side down so they wouldn't fall, but the transition once we made it was easy as I took their cues not my own.

Hope this helps.

Re: sleeping without a cot

We put our son into a big bed when he was 18 months old because he was too big for the cot and he just moved around and always hit the cot sides.

She will now be able to get up if she wakes in the middle of the night so you have to work out what you are going to do in that situation. Also you may want to get a side rail for the bed. They cost between 50-60 dollars and they just slip under the mattress.

Maybe let your daughter choose a doona cover set for her big bed.

It doesn't sound like you are going to have many problems with it if she happily went into it tonight.

Good Luck

Many thanks, I will look at a doona for her. That's a great idea. She is still asleep so i'm hoping all will go well until 4 when she likes a "cuddle". The junior bed has small side rails, I already have side rails when she needs it so will use them if needed.

Thank you Suzy.

Re: sleeping without a cot

We have our 2 year old in a big bed now, but she will only sleep in it if we let her go to sleep on the couch first!  But....we have had some sleep issues with her and are taking the very slow and relaxed approach.

You could get her to help you make the bed, read books on the bed and include having a day nap or quiet time where she isn't allowed out of the bed.  Also if you are putting washing away in there, let her play on her bed while you do.

Thanks so much,  yes I will include her in these activities. I'm sure she would enjoy them . I figure as with all developemental stages it comes with a process and I do appreciate your time.  Funny you say that as I introduced her to the big girls bed" she decided it was a "bong ga bong" . Many thanks for your advice.

Re: sleeping without a cot

I tried to put my daughter into a big bed when she was 20 months old as I was due to have my second child.  We started off sleeping in the big bed during the day for a week then she willingly went and slept in the bed at night.  We did not push her as we thought if we scared her she may not go.  We made a big fuss about how important she would be now sleeping in a big bed but we did have to put a night light in her room which made he happy.
