Re: O neg during pregnancy
A yes, us negative blood group mums are really made into pincushions in pregnancy. I still have to have my needles too, being A-.
The needles your sister will receive are called Anti-D. It is usually given to those women who are of a negative blood group, but whose partners are of a positive blood group. My partner is A+, so I have to have the needles.
It is not usually given in the first pregnancy, but is urged in consecutive pregnancies. The reason being, there could be a possible blood spill between mum and bubs either during pregnancy or labour and birth. This spill has the potential to cause issues with the mother's anti-bodies, and her body will fight very hard to kill the baby off next time round.
A baby born under these circumstances requires and immediate, full blood transfusion in order to survive, and the survival rate is still not that great.
Getting the needles means you take that risk factor away. It is just jabbed into the top of the leg and then off you go.
