Recovery after a c-section

I'm expecting my first little one in a few weeks and have a c-section booked due to complications. During my pregnancy i have managed to put on a lot of weight 30+ kgs ( was already 100kgs when fell pregnant) and was planning to start losing it asap after bubs.

My question is how long after a c-section will it be safe to start exercising and dieting and how long does it usually take one to lose their pregnancy weight  with or without sergery?

Re: Recovery after a c-section

I had a c-section with my 3 year old, due to complications. I was told to take it easy for 6 weeks, but was allowed to do light household chores. I was also told not to baby myself, because it'll take my body forever to heal. Me personally, my pre pregnancy weight came back about a week after my baby was born. I'm a mother of four, and I never had an issue with my pre pregnancy weight. Every woman is different. I hope this helps.

Re: Recovery after a c-section

I had a c-section and it was 4-6 weeks before I could really exercise.

Re: Recovery after a c-section

I gained about 27 kg with my first, and gained about 22 1/2 kg with my twins. I had c-section in both pregnancies and in both pregnancies I lost everything but 4 1/2 kg in the first 3 months after giving birth. I ate like a piglet and I didn't exercise. I did breastfeed though (still am with the twins), so that is probably why I lost weight.

As far as exercising, doctors will tell you not to do much of anything in the first 8 weeks and probably light exercise is Ok after that for another 2-4 weeks. It's best to discuss this with your doctor.

Re: Recovery after a c-section

I was told to wait until 8 weeks before I could start to do anything, and that is with a natural birth.  For a C-section, I would wait even longer, just because you are still healing and it can take quiet a while for it to feel better after a c-section.  Also, you should talk to your doc about it cause there could be issues with your healing as well that would delay any exerciseing.   Also, if you are breastfeeding, don't diet at all.  You need to be eating healthy and often to help keep your milk supply rich for your baby.  Also, it take 9m for your body to adjust for a baby, it can take up to a year for it to go back.  It took me 7 with bf to lose the weight with my second, and that was not exercising alot, just watching what I ate. My SIL took 2 years to lose most of her wieght, did not lose it all, I don't think, and this time around, she has not lost any since the birth, it's been 4m.  But it's all about eating healthy and if anything, go for a walk.  My first born, I never did lose all the weight, I did that this time around.

Re: Recovery after a c-section

I think that in your situation, you really need to consult your Doctor after the birth. Once your Doctor has given you some guidance, I would suggest seeing an accredited personal trainer (either in private, or at a gym), to get some guidance in regard to the type of excercise that you can do safely to slowly lose weight and build strength before taking on anything to strenuous, otherwise you could injure yourself.

Re: Recovery after a c-section

Hi!  It takes about 6-8 weeks after a c-section before you can think about exercising really - you can't lift anything or move too much in the meantime.  I found it harder to lose after a c-section, but it can be done - just be sensible and be gentle on yourself.  Take it easy and eat well.  Hope that helps!

Re: Recovery after a c-section

Generally after 6 weeks you can begin gentle exercises like walking etc but if it's your first it may take you a while especially as looking after a newborn is very tiring.

Remember also that Breastfeeding burns an extra approx 500calories a day so if you stick to a healthy balanced food intake you will lose weight through breastfeeding.

It's probably not a good idea to 'diet' no matter what way you feed as you need to be in top health for your baby and dieting can make you tired and irritable. Maybe chat to a nutritionist or similar after bub is born and work out a healthy eating plan to follow.
