What Do You Look For In A Photographer

Hi, I hope you can help me out. I'm a professional portrait photographer and I'm wondering what you look for when you consider having your portraits created.

The reason I'm asking is so I can offer more and be a bigger help to the parents I'm already working with.

To show my appreciation for your input I will give you a FREE copy of my e-book "How To Take Great Photos With Any Camera, Guaranteed"

To get your free copy of the e-book just send me a quick email at mike@retroportraits.net that says "free e-book" and I'll send it to you right away.

Thanks,

Michael Van De Carr

Re: What Do You Look For In A Photographer

I want a reasonable cost and one or two good photos.  My profile picture was taken at the local chemist, I have very few good family photos as I can't stand the idea of spending hundreds to capture one moment in time.

I worked for a wedding photographer several years ago, I now am very picky about what I like and what I see.  Too many portrait photographers make fatal errors leaving shadows on eyes, and making photos too light or to dark, no natural skin tone.  I was recently flicking through a magazine and found several photos taken under threes, the reflection of the trees gave the subject a green skin tone.

I looked at your site, I thought your photos were magestic and artful.  I think you make a wonderful artist.  Well done.  I don't love the photo of the shirtless boy, my feelings are that we let boys be boys and men be men, and don't confuse the two.  But that is neither here nor there with regard to your obvious talent.

I wish you all the best.

Jodi

Re: What Do You Look For In A Photographer

I got some family one done at christmas, I loved the fact she printed some off and placed them in an album for me to keep. I got two key rings, two magnents, PLUS the disc so I could print more off myself. All this for $200. I thought it was a great price, There were heaps of shots too. Black and white with one item in colour, colour. She also did my wedding two years prior and I just let her take photos of whatever she wanted, again she showed her arty side. Good luck hope this helps.

Photos where the kids look "natural" even when posed. The cheesy school photos "say CHEESE!" grins that look like the kids are just showing off their teeth don't do much for me - well, except make me laugh. I've got a heap of recently taken prof photos on my photos page here on minti if you want to have a look at the kinds of things I like to see. My favourite is this one, because although posed, the kids look relaxed, the smile is natural, it's clear but soft, it doesn't have huge amounts of negative space, and the pose itself has a sense of closeness between the kids...

I prefer photographs that don't look so "posed", so that's what I look for. I like to see lots of samples of the photographers work. :)

When it comes to my children, I want a photographer who is fast. Have things ready so that there is not much waiting for my family because I bring my children when they are most happy and sometimes this window isn't very long. So if you have tricks in your sleeves to make them smile fast, I'm there. :-)  I also just ignore the high priced ones.
