getting rid of dummy

Hi my 1 year old son sleeps with a dummy.  He dosen't have it any other time except in his cot to sleep.

I'm just wondering at what age did you get rid of the dummy or did your child just get rid of it his/her self?

What is the best way to get rid of it??

Re: getting rid of dummy

i was brought up to make a trade. ie give it to santa.

My kids were 2.5 and 3 when they gave theirs away. My son decided cause he was a big brother adn my daughters poped so she threw it in the bin and never asked for another one.

one thing i do know is dont force it. my sister had hers taken from her and thrown away. now she still sucks her thumb and she is 21. (that is worst case)

hi, My friends kid had a dummy. When he got  old enough to understand what you say to him, she got rid og it by saying "the dogs took it and chewed it up". haha it worked

Take it, throw it away, and pretend you never had it to begin with.  Oh, be prepared for him to give up his naps though, as did when the dummy was taken away.

Re: getting rid of dummy

If you are ready for a night or two of upset then do it now. The earlier the better and if it is just at night it will just be a comfort thing. It took my nephew 2 nights to learn at 14 months how to comfort himself without his dummy. He cried for 20 minutes the first night and only woke once and the second night he asked for 'dundun', mum said no it's gone, and he whinged for a few seconds then went to sleep. Best to check the whole house to make sure there isn't any stashed also.
